How much times face are dealers paying for silver these days?

DennisHDennisH Posts: 14,042 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm leaving for the FUN show on Wednesday. A buddy is going to join me there who has about $100 face of circ. 90% coins that a neighbor of his wants to sell. He said I can have it for whatever the best "times face" buy price is that we get quoted from dealers at the show.

What numbers should we expect to hear?
When in doubt, don't.

I have a buyer in the midwest that pays about 10x face... not quite, but very close.

Last time I looked a week or two ago, wholesale bids were around 8.25-8.5x face...

Dennis, your best quotes should come from dealers that handle large volumes of "junk" 90%, such as Silvertowne or Golden Eagle. Keep in mind also that circ. "junk" usually commands lesser premiums than BU "junk". Conversely, the greatest premium should be expected for a deal of circ. Walkers.

FYI eBay $100 face is bringing in between $1050 & $1100 at this time, therefore, if you can get close to 10 x from a dealer...take it.

Dan: Thanks for those comments. While I have not seen the coins I fully expect the majority of them will be Roosevelts, Washingtons and Franklins.

DImes, Quarters, Halves, or mixed???? It usually matters. And also, it would not take much of a swing in spot to change the multiplier, so keep that in mind.

It was less than a year ago a silver Washington common date quarter would not be worth enough to buy a gallon of gas. Today, even though the price of gas jumped for the first time in four months, a silver quarter will afford a gallon of gas plus a guy could get a clad quarter in change.
