Battery Question

Got a Bounty Hunter Landstar detector for Christmas and in the paperwork it says to use 9v alkaline batteries. I can do that ... but does anyone know if it would be harmful to use NiMh rechargeables? I have some NiMh 9v batteries already. What do you suppose the problem would be?

Have used them in my XLT when my regular pack gets low with no problems.
My extra pack takes 8 AA's.
Regular pack is a rechargeable battery in itself.
