He is upset that PSA will not grade unlicensed cards of Pete Rose. OK, fair enough. He is even more angry that Joe Orlando stated that the cards must be licensed by the respective sport's governing body (MLB, NFL, NHL, etc) before it can be graded by them. OK, I see. However, it is hypocritical to say such a thing, yet grade a bunch of football cards that were unlicensed. Joe could have simply stated that this Pete Rose is not graded by PSA. End of story. They are a private company and can run it any way they want, unfortunately for some. To make a blanket and general statement as Joe did, and that does not hold up to scrutiny, makes PSA seem very hypocritical and inconsistent.
I think Don might support government regulation of Collector's Universe. That way, it would be more consistent in its policies and the grading would be better too since it must meet government scrutiny as well as the consumer's. Government regulation has done some good in various sectors: For example, insurance companies must remain solvent, otherwise, the government cracks down--this is good since it reinforces what the customer relies on whenever they do have an insurance claim.
The comment from Lawnmowerman about PSA being a high standard company because it refused to grade the unlicensed Pete Rose card is a good gesture, but its not factually true. PSA does grade unlicensed cards and Joe Orlando did a horrible job expaining the PSA policy. Lawnmowerman would have made an excellent point about PSA's standards, but apparently we know of gross contradictions.
If this Pete Rose card was printed after he got banned from MLB, I do not think the card could ever be licensed by MLB. He is not part of MLB so how can MLB sanction any of Pete Roses' cards? The card company paid Pete for his likeness. That was fair. But MLB cannot license a post-banned Rose card unless they reinstate him.

Steve, I know what everyone said just based on the evidence of this thread. I will stand corrected as new data comes in. Bottom line, you are right, who really knows what is going on if the people quoted cannot be here to confirm their statements.

Exactly, who knows what Joe said and in what context it was said?
Also, it is very possible that Don thought he heard what he said.
