If you've returned coins to the Mint and haven't received a refund...

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,419 ✭✭✭✭✭
I returned some things to the Mint. They processed the return on the 20th. I called just now to see why the credit hadn't shown up yet on my credit card and was told that the refund was "placed on hold" and that it would only be processed after I called the Mint's "Claims Department". So I'll call tomorrow. But what if I had never called???

Anyway, now you know what to do.

this is so lame... I did the same thing several months ago... returned some coins and didn't receive a refund... ended up calling and they told me they don't reverse a charge until the person calls and requests the credit!!! really lame and not very customer friendly...

Never had a problem getting a credit issued ... however, it takes about 2-3 weeks and from what I understand, the credits are processed only one day a week.

  • I was issued a refund on the 10th on November. I called today and was told the same thing. Claims then released the hold after my call.

Best case USM refunds take weeks from date of reciept of the returned coins. Frequently you have to finally call to release the hold. Apparently, they would eventually refund even if you didn't, but by then (assuming that they eventually did issue the refund) it would probably be to your estate!

I've only returned to the Mint once (but it was recently) and had no problem.
The credit appeared on my next CC statement. No phone calls necessary.

It is interesting however, about the claims department. I have a current order
that has been on hold for over 10 days now so I called and after being transferred
three times because the reps didn't have enough 'privileges', the person I spoke
to in the claims department finally put my order 'In process'.

This is the first I've heard about having to contact claims for returns as well.
New procedure from the Mint perhaps? Maybe hoping folks send in returns
and then forget to check for the credit.

It takes a good three weeks to a month to get your refund AFTER they receive your items. If they processed the return on the 20th, look for the refund to hit your credit card around christmas.

I had just the opposite happen to me. In 2006 I brought 10 of the 20th anniversary silver eagle sets. When I received them at least one coin in every set had spots - some were real bad. I even posted pictures of them here. I sent them back and requested replacements. About a week later I got a credit from the mint for the full purchase price. I called the mint and after being transferred about three times I told the person what had happened and said I didn't want my money back I wanted the sets replaced. She told me they would send out the sets and bill my card. I received the sets a short time later, but they have never billed my card.

Incidents like this might explain why they want people to call to get refunds processed.

I called yesterday because my order was sent early last week, but I got bad tracking information on the order, and it hasn't arrived. I am chaffed at myself for ever ordering from them.

I wonder that I may never get my order after talking to customer service yesterday and they cannot come up with tracking that actually works on the USPS website.

I have returned two damaged items in the past three months. The first one took 16 days from the time I received the "Return Confirmation" email from the mint until I received the "Credit Acknowledged" email, then an additional 5 days until the credit showed up on my CC account. The second return is on day 14 since I received the "Return Confirmation" email. I haven't called the mint on either. The whole cycle appears to take about 3 weeks, plus or minus a couple days...

Orders over $300 are usually mailed via FEDEX and not USPS...

and recently the Mint has been mailing out orders for under $300 via UPS...

Right, but mine was mailed registered mail, because I have a PO box and no street address.

Good luck with that Mr. Eureka.

I've been on hold with the mint for an hour about a return they received from me on the 5th. They
state that my account was sent to "headquarters," who now is closed for the holiday. When I asked
why "headquarters," she quickly put me on hold. Still holding !

I called after 14 days and then I got the refund the next day.

Update - the mint states that they found someone working today at headquarters.
That person is now sending my return over to accounting.

Hmmm. From rep to senior rep to claims to headquarters to accounting.

Well, now that everyone's involved the red tape will probably become stickier.

I'll look for my refund in about a month.

So I spoke to the Claims Department on Monday and they said they would take care of it. As of today, still no refund, so I called them again. They said to be patient, but it shouldn't be more than another 5-7 days. I think they're still trying to decide if they will return the money or use it to help bail out Ford and GM. It doesn't look good for poor MrEureka.

What POs me is that I will have to pay Bank of America the money before the refund is received, then screw around with the bank to get it back. Today marks 3 weeks since the returns and all I have received is a e-mail from the Mint. I am not a cherry picker and this was my first ever return.

UPDATE: Just got off the phone with the Mint. Received the usual CSR to Senior Rep to Claims hand off biz. Bottom line was they promised to release the refund in 3 to 5 business days, we shall see.

    Edited for the update.

Perhaps a new Mint "Czar" is in order to go along with the new proposed Automobil Czar.

  • You might enjoy this one too....

I decided to return some of the coins I had ordered because I changed my mind and wanted to order something else.

I took the tracking numbers from my Priority Mail labels and checked them on the USPS web site.

Here is the status: Arrival at Unit, November 22, 2008, 5:56 am, MEMPHIS, TN 38118

Now I paid for Sig Confirm and insurance. I sent each return in a seperate box per USM instructions (I know that others have combined orders on returns but I didn't want any hassels). All of them have this status on them, so I called the USPS. They said that I need to wait 21 days (excluding holidays) and then file a claim on them at the PO. I asked them if I could call the local PO and have them check and they said that for "security reasons" they would not tell me anything about the items. Now I am really concerned.

But on a whim, I called the USM to inquire about them. They stated that all of the items had been received! I started looking through my E-Mail and found the messages about the returns from the USM. I was then transfered somewhere else and they said that the refunds were "in process". So I guess I'll get them at some point (I'll keep calling about them).

Should I contact the PO and try to get a refund on the Sig Confirm since they can't provide the results? I'm not going to file a claim on the insurance since I know that they were delivered, but what if I needed the confirmation to prove delivery?
I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff will be coming down for quite a while!

I just returned the 1 Oz platinum today because the coin rim was damaged. So I guess I will have to call them, or just perhaps go ahead and instigate a chargeback on the old charge card.

After all that farking waiting, I get the coin on Monday and it was damaged - like apparently a lot of them are. I will never buy from the mint again. The last time I did was the SF mint commem, and it is fine but the packaging sucks.

Actually 7-10 business days after the call.

So the US Mint just notified me that they processed my refund, 20 days after they received the returns. I guess that's pretty good, at least compared to my Social Security "contributions".
