Personal referances?

Hi all. I am about to send some "stuff" to BECOKA for imaging. Trouble is, I don't know him except on these forums. Can youall give me some referances for him?? I know in my heart he's good as gold, but would feel better hearing it from others who know him better than I do. Thanks..

<< <i>smart move to do this. I lost a nice coin to a forum member and their have been numerous incidents of this happening. Just yesterday their was a thread with a member saying he lost $250,000!! >>
Was your coin eventually recovered or did that forum member end up disappearing from the boards after this incident?

This is a misleading statement. The forum member who "lost $250,000" from another forum member had an ongoing business relationship with another (one was employed by the other on a full time basis for 2+ years). This was not example of a member who sent another a coin for sale and imaging and never received it back.
I only know Beckoa from these forums, other than a book sale on ebay, have never done business with Beckoa, but based on his reputation here and in the numismatic community, would not hesitate to send him coins for imaging.
Incidents of chicanery between forum members have been very few, the exception rather than the rule.
<< <i>As long as you dont sent him any early gold you should be fine. >>
What I am contemplating sending is more valualbe than any gold.

darktone- If you don't know the specifics why would you reference it ? The 250k mentioned was a business dealing that had nothing to do with the forums. You said "I lost a nice coin to a forum member and their have been numerous incidents of this happening." If you spoke to those issues you were involved in, or are familiar with and how they relate to Becoka it might help the OPer make his decision.
Personally, I would have no confidence issues in sending Becoka coins for imaging, although I've not done it.

Good afternoon Capt Dean,
The coins and patches were, in fact, from the memorial ceremony. At the
end of the ceremony, various Soldier from the Multi-National Forces Iraq
stopped at CPL Thompson memorial to pay their respects. It was at that
time that numerous military personnel removed their own patch from their
uniform or gifted their personal coin (out of respect) to CPL Thompson.
Please relay to his father that was due to the amount of respect that
CPL Thompson received from his leaders, and peers. He was a phenomenal
young man and warrior that was genuinely loved by all.

CSM Simms,
My name is Cpt Dean and I am the Casualty Assistance Officer for CPL
Mike Thompson. I first want to say thank you for all of your support
during this time. I saw that you had sent CPL Thompson's father (Kory
Thompson) a box with coins, patches, etc. The father wanted to know if
these items where from the ceremony that was held in Iraq or just coins
and patches from friends etc.... Any light you can shed on this would be
great and I appreciate you and your men! Keep you heads down and come
home safe!
Sincerely,
CT Brad Dean

Registered Mail (within the U.S.) is never "lost or stolen," because everyone who handles it signs for it, every step of the way.

Your real worry is shipping, dont worry about Ben. I dont know if your concern is insurance dollars, I know these items have much much more than any $$ value. So maybe consider a fed ex overnight, coordinate with Ben to know when he is home to sign. To me sometimes the less travel time the better. I feel better knowing it is there next morning than waiting.
Also check with Ben and see if you guys will be at the same show anytime soon. I have brought back many customer coins the past several shows. Shipping only one way, is safer than both ways.

I can't imagine the cost being that far out of whack. Even if it were, why be so cheap with a rarity?
Is this his day job or is it moonlighting and sharing/enjoying a great hobby? Is he insured? Are the coins left unguarded if he has a day job?

I'm in Tulsa.... I checked Expedia. And a flight from Okc to La would only run 261.00 with a 2 day layover..
For the package you described the USPS would not touch it.. Enjoy your trip...

I know of a few encounters where a company was fine on monday and broke on friday and those that handed over money on thrusday lost it. Things can and do happen.
Sometimes you got to have trust, but computer forums do not always give you the real picture on the other side. There could very well be guys on here that you think have 250k collections that in reality do not own a single coin.
Would i send coins to most of the regulars on here? After all i typed? Yes probably. Is it the smartest thing to do? Probably not, but i hate to always be doom and gloom.
Lasvegasteddy sent me a 1000 dollar coin with no clear payment plan when i was fairly new on here. I am grateful for guys like this. Had something happened once i recieved the coin (lose a job, accident or whatever) i would have gone hungry before i stiffed a guy like this. Lose a job was a bad example since i have not had a real one in over 20 years.
I would try to find a local guy to do the same service if at all possible. I try to control as much as possible to minimize the risk.
