2007 American Legacy Sets heading north

It seems that recently these have turned up a bit in price.

If you recall, the original issue price was $135 last year.
I bought two and have been tracking them ever since.
It's a nice set, but it's so big, I'm never going to display
it, etc. Plus, it's just different packaging for other coins
I already own.

Anyway, tracking them on eBay, some of them were going
for only around $150ish not that long ago. Not even worth
listing it IMO. You'd end up taking a loss with the fees.

Well, I noticed last week that some have been hitting $200
or better, so I decided to list one. I don't want this to be
considered spam, so I won't list the ID or my username.
But, with 8 hours to go it's bid up to about $215 already.

Were people waiting for these to be included in the Mint's
fire sale or something and found themselves disappointed?

Or has the introduction of the 2008 sets reignited a new
collector base for the previous issues?

  • This is a curious development. The very first year (2005) had an after the fact price spike because production was limited to 50,000 units. This made the "set" (not the coins) more rare than the 1996 Prestige Proof Set ($500ish at the time). This spike quickly faded and the 2005 set dropped back to issue price (or below). Its interesting now that the 2007 set is spiking. The production run of 25,000 makes it the lowest mintage "set" in a very long time - I was surprised that they did not appear in the "clear out the vaults" sale this week, so perhaps the realization that there are "only" 25,000 of them is driving the price up.

I've never really thought that there is much of a collector base for these... Perhaps they are beginning to catch on?

  • I'll just hang on to the four sets I have of the 2005 American Legacy until the 250th Anniversary of the Marine Corps. I didn't bother buying the 2006-2008 sets because I couldn't see paying $75+ for the cardboard.

I suspect somethings will have a temporary price spike due to the christmas holidays coming up. image
  • The value of the sets should really be based on the desirability of the included commemorative(s). If have the 2006 and 2007, but I decided not to get the 2008 since there is no shortage of the Bald Eagle proofs.

My question is what type of box to use for shipping? Cant find any USPS boxes I have to fit. Also thanks for the heads up on prices going up.

Only the 2007 set has increased in value, because it was available for sale for about 3 month before going dark late last year. The 2005 & 2006 you can buy for below Mint issue price and in some cases the 2005 for about half the issue price.

I believe the final sales total for the 2007 was less than 10,000

If you are looking to flip them for a profit you will need to hold them for at least 10 years.

USPS does make a Priority box that is 15"x12"x3", and if you don't want to ship Priority, just cut it down one of the long sides and turn it inside out.
