Postal Service Looks To Cut 40,000 Jobs In First Layoff In History

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - "We lost 2 billion dollars and like any other business we have to stay afloat." And to keep from sinking, the United States Postal Service is considering cutting thousands of jobs nationwide. Lavelle Pepper with the post office in Shreveport says they too are feeling the affects of the same disease hitting the country... a struggling economy. "We employ about 685,000 people. If we do layoffs it would include clerks, carriers, mail handlers across all crafts."

Pepper says the postal service is looking to eliminate 40,000 jobs nationwide. There's not an exact number on how many of those could be from the Ark-La-Tex. Pepper says workers who are not part of union with six or less years of service would likely be the first on the chopping block. "We've identified 16 thousand people that are not covered under contract. We'll see what those numbers add up to."

The postal service is also offering early retirement packages to workers over the age of 50 who have more than 20 years on the job. But according to pepper it may not be enough. "The preliminary numbers look like it's not going to be enough and we may have to do something else." But despite what may happen, Pepper says customers will not feel the pain they're going through. "The general public when it takes place won't se any decrease in service.. They largely won't know about it."

I fully disagree with that. I've mailed over 3000 packages in the last year + without a single one lost. I challenge any forum member to come up with something they have done 3000 times in a row without a failure.

My concern is that the layoffs could change that performance history.

    I agree with you.

Seven years on ebay with only one miscue. Many of the shipments were very fragile car trim parts. Lets see UPS or FedEx match this.

I like my mail carrier. He caters to my specific needs and goes out of his way to deliver my mail. UPS, on the other hand, should not be allowed to deliver parcels!

I also like all the clerks at the Auburn PO with one exception. This one guy is so slow! Honey drips faster than he can do even the simplest of tasks!

They're talking of closing my branch PO. If they did, it would turn my 4-5 minute walk to the PO (and it's rare that I'm not within a 30 second walk doing something else) into a 10-20 minute trek. I only need this PO until the end of May, so hopefully it can stick it out that long.

No, but they don't deliver on Saturdays!

They're also the group that left $1,000 worth of Direct Ship dollars on my driveway, or on the back of my car, or in any damn place except in front of the friggin door!

Hasn't happened to me yet. I know that's no guarantee, but still...

Another UPS incident I was privileged to be involved in was when they managed to damage beyond repair a tire rim being shipped to me. I have to admit, I was impressed- being able to destroy a steel wheel takes real commitment.

BTW- do you know what UPS charges to deliver a 1 ounce package from one side of the country to the other? Is it anywhere near 83 cents? image

My town has four zip codes. Two POs are part time. They could easily be consolidated down to one. The only reason it hasn't happened yet is political clout. I'm sure that if the USPS could be run as a real business without political interference, they could start to turn a profit. I'm on the side of those who have had good USPS service. I think they have done well under the circumstances the have to work with.

As they increased stamp prices many people set up auto bill paying and sent less mail and more email so raising stamps may not help. Now they deliver mostly junk mail at a lower rate than stamped mail. They should raise the junk mail fee by 10 cents (save some paper)and drop stamp prices by 2 cents.

They should cut more, they could stop delivering on Wed (or even drop to 4 deliveries per week) and save a lot of money and gas and I wouldn't mind.

No private industry that I know of gives retirement in only 20 years plus counting other gov service. They should raise it to 25 years and not include other government service time. They should also add similar retirement rules for all government workers and poleticians except keep military retirement at 20 years.

Thinking about taxpayer funded freebies makes me grumpy image

There are certainly some surly clerks to deal with at certain loications, but bottom line is that USPS is virtually perfect (and cost effective) when shipping packages. Try shipping a coin through UPS and see how much it'll cost you.

If it's true that this would be the first layoffs in USPS history, it is misleading. They hire thousands and thousands of temporary employees each year. My mother has worked at a main post office processing facility for over 20 years. I guess she would be eligible for early retirement. But I can remember when I was a kid they used to hire real employees and she used to complain when they started switching to temps. The quality of the workers went way down, as many temps know they'll be gone in a few months anyway.

It might be the largest layoff in their history, but I find it hard to believe it's the first.

As for the quality of the service, I have had 3 or 4 envelopes go missing then turn up 3 or 4 weeks later. They likely "fell through the cracks". But I've never had any trouble with any of their other services--registered, priority, express, etc. I can understand the occasional First Class letter going missing ever now and then. I still find it easier and cheaper to go with USPS over the others.
