SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - "We lost 2 billion dollars and like any other business we have to stay afloat." And to keep from sinking, the United States Postal Service is considering cutting thousands of jobs nationwide. Lavelle Pepper with the post office in Shreveport says they too are feeling the affects of the same disease hitting the country... a struggling economy. "We employ about 685,000 people. If we do layoffs it would include clerks, carriers, mail handlers across all crafts."
Pepper says the postal service is looking to eliminate 40,000 jobs nationwide. There's not an exact number on how many of those could be from the Ark-La-Tex. Pepper says workers who are not part of union with six or less years of service would likely be the first on the chopping block. "We've identified 16 thousand people that are not covered under contract. We'll see what those numbers add up to."
The postal service is also offering early retirement packages to workers over the age of 50 who have more than 20 years on the job. But according to pepper it may not be enough. "The preliminary numbers look like it's not going to be enough and we may have to do something else." But despite what may happen, Pepper says customers will not feel the pain they're going through. "The general public when it takes place won't se any decrease in service.. They largely won't know about it."

I fully disagree with that. I've mailed over 3000 packages in the last year + without a single one lost. I challenge any forum member to come up with something they have done 3000 times in a row without a failure.
My concern is that the layoffs could change that performance history.

I agree with you.
Seven years on ebay with only one miscue. Many of the shipments were very fragile car trim parts. Lets see UPS or FedEx match this.

I agree, I think I had had only 2 problems in the last 10 years.

I also like all the clerks at the Auburn PO with one exception. This one guy is so slow! Honey drips faster than he can do even the simplest of tasks!

<< <i>They're talking of closing my branch PO. If they did, it would turn my 4-5 minute walk to the PO (and it's rare that I'm not within a 30 second walk doing something else) into a 10-20 minute trek. I only need this PO until the end of May, so hopefully it can stick it out that long.airplanenut >>

The PO is still quasi-government. Nothing will be done quickly. You probably have at least a year.

I haven't had a problem with a shipment, coming or going, in over five and one half years. The service is usually quite fast. The Post Office is only two blocks from my house. I think the USPS does quite a good job.

Bingo. Layoffs will never happen. Postal rate increases will.

Now, see? That is why the economy/businesses are having problems. They aren't talking about laying off the lowest performers. No. They are talking about laying off those that areN'T part of a union or have a lot of seniority.
I have seniority over a lot of people where I am, but I still work my butt off to make sure I am a top performer (and my yearly reviews show it!) If businesses laid of the underperformers instead of the less senior/unionized, maybe they wouldn't be doing so poorly!
Sorry...had to edit my typo

Bochiman, I read that the exact opposite.

True enough, but then again, they don't deliver packages like this...

No, but they don't deliver on Saturdays!
They're also the group that left $1,000 worth of Direct Ship dollars on my driveway, or on the back of my car, or in any damn place except in front of the friggin door!
And its not just coins either, any parcel is a good candidate!~

............the usps has and will do the same.
I doesn't mean they will close post offices.
Lets face it, there's dead weight in most businesses and letting it go is usually a good thing. Atleast if it isn't you...

I thought ups doesn't insure coins?, That is, they will insure your stuff, but if it's lost and you tell'em it was coins your done.
<< <i>............the usps has and will do the same.
Hasn't happened to me yet. I know that's no guarantee, but still...
Another UPS incident I was privileged to be involved in was when they managed to damage beyond repair a tire rim being shipped to me. I have to admit, I was impressed- being able to destroy a steel wheel takes real commitment.
BTW- do you know what UPS charges to deliver a 1 ounce package from one side of the country to the other? Is it anywhere near 83 cents?

My town has four zip codes. Two POs are part time. They could easily be consolidated down to one. The only reason it hasn't happened yet is political clout. I'm sure that if the USPS could be run as a real business without political interference, they could start to turn a profit. I'm on the side of those who have had good USPS service. I think they have done well under the circumstances the have to work with.
At the government? HaHAHa.
That'll be the day.
They are just buttering you up for a
10 cent an oz. postage increase.
Get real.
Government NEVER lays off. Ever. Ever. Ever. Ever.
Book it.
Regards, Steve.
They should cut more, they could stop delivering on Wed (or even drop to 4 deliveries per week) and save a lot of money and gas and I wouldn't mind.
No private industry that I know of gives retirement in only 20 years plus counting other gov service. They should raise it to 25 years and not include other government service time. They should also add similar retirement rules for all government workers and poleticians except keep military retirement at 20 years.
Thinking about taxpayer funded freebies makes me grumpy

It might be the largest layoff in their history, but I find it hard to believe it's the first.
As for the quality of the service, I have had 3 or 4 envelopes go missing then turn up 3 or 4 weeks later. They likely "fell through the cracks". But I've never had any trouble with any of their other services--registered, priority, express, etc. I can understand the occasional First Class letter going missing ever now and then. I still find it easier and cheaper to go with USPS over the others.

Chicken Little--or Goldbully--I see nothing in the article about cutting Register Mail service. Your thread title is sensationalizing the news.
