<< <i>*** "Very Satisfied" 5 Star DSR Shipping Sale *** Through the end of October, Just Collect is running a sale on shipping: All graded cards ship for $3 for the first card and $1 for each additional card, and insurance is optional on purchases under $100. We appreciate your business and hope you will be Very Satisfied with this transaction and reflect that with Positive Feedback and 5 Stars in each category! >>
Hello customers, we've been getting hammered on our star ratings because our shipping rates are outrageous, so we bumped our shipping rates down for a little while so Ebay doesn't put us on double secret probation.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give us 5 stars for our shipping charges. Please!

<< <i>Something seems fishy about this?? Or did they just start a 2nd Ebay ID?? >>
Pretty sure it's just their second ID.

from their original just_collect eBay store, "just_collect Vintage Sports Cards".
By doing that, they aren't jeopardizing their slogan "eBay's #1 Vintage Card Consignment Firm".
Personally, I like the idea .... makes it a lot easier to scan their vintage cards.
The change in their shipping charges is pretty much self-explanatory

Here is the feedback they leave: "Thanks for a 5 Star sale! Please leave us 5 Stars in each category. Thanks!"
That feedback is fine, but then you get this note tucked in with your item which seems a bit pushy when at the time of that sale they were charging $5.25 for shipping with a mandatory insurance charge added.
Edited to add: Just because I can see the shipping cost in the auction description does not make it a reasonable amount.
I recently won a low grade common in a PSA holder (I broke out for my raw set), seller charged $3.50 to ship, $1.75 for insurance on a $4.00 card. I emailed the seller and asked that the insurance not be required on a $4.00 purchase. His response was if I paid cash he would not charge for insurance.
I paid the insurance, he sent it un-insured. He got a neg.

<< <i>I have always had a problem with sellers who "require" insurance on all items. I do not mind paying for the insurance if the value of the item warrants, howver, on a card that sells for less than $30 or so, seems like a waste, especially on $5 cards.

As soon as I read this "His response was if I paid cash he would not charge for insurance." I knew right away
this guy was trying to cover his PayPal/eBay fees with the ol' "required insurance" scheme.

I must agree.
However, lately, I have tried including a few notes in with the merch.
Just simple stuff, like:
"Your positive feedback and 5-star ratings are very much appreciated."
It seems to have helped. My Shipping Cost stars are up a little. (Most
of my shipping is "FREE." This generally leads to lower stars, due to
the one or two folks each week who think 3 = not applicable.)
I rarely sell collectibles, but those buyers are TOTALLY different than
the buyers I deal with. Mine are mean and nasty and scammers and
bottomfeeders, OR very nice simple folks who just may need a little
reminder to do the right thing.

I actually kinda like justcollects' little FB card. It's pushy and I am
not sure folks will read it, but it is proactive and might help some.
<< <i>......I actually kinda like justcollects' little FB card.......... >>
I didn't mind receiving the card as much as I minded the fact that they're telling me that because I can see the shipping cost in the auction description I should consider it very reasonable (5 stars = very reasonable).
To me, charging $5.25 for shipping with a mandatory insurance charge added (only a $35 sale) for 1 graded card is not very reasonable. The more I think about it makes me believe that it actually leans towards unreasonable.
<< <i>Storm it would be awesome to see Ebay's response to suspending a sellers account due to Excess shipping fee's when all the seller's auctions are with free shipping. >>

It is possible that a small seller could suffer that fate.
I have not seen any reports of that EXACT circumstance,
but mathmatically it could happen.
4.3 is the cutoff in any category. That will, of course, be
waived for the BIG BOX fellas.

We really need a BIG push to get rid of the DSR scam.
It is the worst thing that has happened in the many
years I have been on EBAY.
LOTS of new sites are coming onto the scene. Eventually,
one or more will break through.
There IS traffic on ebid.net, delcampe.com, ecrater.com.
/////////
According to the experts at auctionbytes, the LARGEST
trend is for sellers to have MANY selling venues, and
their own webistes.
The Steiners recently opened everyplaceisell.com. Folks
can register their stores there, and they are dumped
into the search sites. Currently, there is no charge.
Websites are cheap and google adwords bring business.
Way over 50% of my EBAY sales come from googlebase,
and the standard EBAY dump to google. I know this
not from tracking data, but from the fact that when
googlebase gets a glitch, my sales are cut in half.
///////////////////////////
It IS both unreasonable AND a RIPOFF.
.........
The "moral hazard" issue comes up when we look at the folks
who "knowingly agreed" to the listing terms, and THEN leave
low stars after the agreement is made.
My personal record on "consumer protection" is clear, BUT a
part of me wants INFORMED buyers to assume some responsibility
for FREELY choosing to do biznez with bad guys and then complaining
about it.
idunno the correct answer.
<< <i>.......BUT a

I freely did business with them and I freely paid the high shipping AND insurance. Just don't tell me how many stars to leave you. I may accept a sellers stated terms but I do not have to like them.
If I get a package, and I don't think the SH charge that the seller posted in the auction was fair, then I will leave less than 5 stars for the SH.
If I paid enough SH for a bubble mailer and delivery confirmation, and I get a top loader in a PWE, then I make my decision on how many stars to give.
//////////////////////
I think that is probably the correct answer.
On EBAY, buyers are entitled to leave FB/stars based on their OWN
perceptions of what the WHOLE transaction was like.
/////////////////////
Yup.
Because MANY folks don't look at it that way, it is ALWAYS a mistake
to gouge on shipping. Unless you accept that you may get low stars
in other unrelated categories as payback.
............................
Under the current circumstances, I see little reason that - on BINs -
sellers should not get with the "FREE" shipping scheme. The ONLY
minor challenge is making folks NOT leave a 3 because they think it
doesn't apply. (Sellers worried about EBAY collecting FVFs on S+H
can simply raise their prices a tad to cover that.)
Search standing is bumped, and you get a "free" subtitle until the
end of the year.
And, most important to me, I don't have to listen to folks complain
about the post oiffice charging money to mail stuff.

Thanks, Baseball Card Exchange!!!
Care to retract your obviously wrong statement?
With his overhead one could say that 5.00 is reasonable.
It is when joe Schmoe ebay seller charges 5.00
Then states 1.00 each additional.....
Also it should be noted that Steve Hart insures everyone of his packages.

item # 110303784067 A $3.25 card, yet he wants $5.00 to ship it? That card could be shipped for under $1.50. Multiply this profit times his hundreds of auctions and you have a very nice extra little income.
How about $8.00 to ship 25 raw cards that sold for $7.00? item # 110300497224 This is on the verge of being a Ripoff!
I bought a Don Sutton card for $11.44 and paid $8.00 to ship. Could have been $7.00. It was a while ago. I needed the card and factored the shipping into my bid. I do not remember the exact cost of shipping my card, but it was not even close to $8.00. It was shipped as a first class package in a bubble mailer, not even priority.
I understand that he buys the insurance on cards and must recover that cost, but why not offer the buyer of buyer of the $3.25 card the choice not to insure the package. Is anybody going to go through the trouble of filing a claim through the post office for $3, 5 or $7.00? Not me.
I just find it kind of odd that members defend this seller by saying he has a high overhead. Is that a reason to make money on the shipping? If he has a high overhead, start your opening bids at $5.99 and charge actual shipping charges. Yet these same members bash other sellers who charge $3.50 to ship a card. At least 4 sharp corners ships my cards in a 400 count box for $4.00.
I have seen members of this board bash other members who dare to question this seller. I was called all kinds of names the first time I questioned this seller. Your blind following is just a little scary, a little bit of objectivity might go a long way. I am not alone in these feelings, Steve Hart is at a 4.7 DSR for Shipping and Handling Charges.
I remember when this board was enjoyable and looked out for members. Have a wonderful day and be sure to support your favorite seller.
Of course packaging comes into play with shipping costs.
Many sellers charge between $3-5 and package their items poorly in my opinion.
I don't mind paying $4 for uninsured shipping (with insurance optional) if the packaging is done well and the item is sent securely.
I'm talking cards here only. I honestly don't mind sellers making a small profit on the shipping, but I may be the exception to this.
To me shipping is more than postage and a padded mailer. Driving to the post office, possible employee costs, insurance, ebay fee's, paypal fee's, taxes, electricity used, paper for the invoice, inkjet costs, packaging materials...... these are all costs when doing business. I don't expect these things for free.
I realize some buyers that are new to ebay may not clearly understand the workings of the DSR's, but to ask a buyer to leave them 5 stars on a transaction is kind of sleazy. That's like begging someone to say thank you. Sounds desperate.
Just Rip You off were charging $5.25 for one item, plus forcing you to buy the insurance. To me that's too high. On top of that, they would also spam your feedback profile. They also use to hold feedback hostage prior to ebay's changes with the feedback system.
I no longer bid with them because they blocked me from bidding on their ebay auctions after I politely asked them to not spam my feedback with their contact number (a clear ebay abuse violation).
So their sales tactics no longer annoy me becaus they no longer get my bids or business.
They've also cost many of their consignors money by blocking my bids, as I bid on at least 20 diff. PSA sets I'm working on building.
Not the smartest business decision.
I find it hilarious that now they spam you for 5 stars and had to hold a special shipping sale for October in order to get their DSR ratings boosted. Below 4.3 and you can get bounced. That's a shame.
