received box from us mint no coins inside???

Friday I received a box that was to have two 1/2 oz platinum coins. The brown tape is not cut and sealed. Thursday Fedx left a door tag as I was not home when they came with the delivery. On Friday I received and signed for the box as well as a second box that was heavier and smaller. ( I assume it has my 4 coin unc plat set). I put everything away asap and just had the chance to look at my stuff. I opened the larger box first.. Inside I found an advertising insert, my invoice and two empty platinum boxes. No coins The boxes are empty?? The bottom of the box brown tape is intact but hanging slightly.

Who do I call, The US MINT or Fedx??

the mint. this has had to happen to collectors before. people are not
always accurate and bound to make mistakes.

worse comes to worse... use your CC to do a charge back after sending
everything back and trying to work it out.

i am not sure what fedex could possibly do for you...

is it up to the person getting the package to do a insurance claim or
    does the mint?

it seems fedex simply delivered an unmolested box without a problem.

    Fully agree!

Contact the Mint, they'll make it right for you.

If not, then do the chargeback.

When doing a credit card chargeback, do they charge you a fee for this service ?

Perhaps your Fed Ex driver is also a coin collector.image

Both the carrier and The Mint will become involved before it is over.

To Err Is Human.... To Collect Err's Is Just Too Much Darn Tootin Fun!
  • When you call them they will mail you a form to fill out.. I had this happen earlier this year on some proof coins.

You fill out the form.. Sign your name saying you are not trying to defraud the Mint.. And about 2 weeks after
mailing the form back you will have your replacements....

No hassle and no questions asked... It's almost too easy...

I would call FedEx just as a courtesy to let them know of the problem. When you call the Mint if they say they shipped the coins then FedEx will be involved with the claim. The Mint is responsible for reimbursing you but both will be involved before it is over.

I had this happen with a First Spouse. I called the mint and they verified and righted the situation.
They'll take care of it - just call them up.

I had something similar happen to me Friday. I saw that the email the US Mint sent me for a recent purchase of some coins and they had two tracking numbers. My wife signed for the only package that came and I called the mint because the package weighed 1.1lbs, which seemed to be on the light side of what I was expecting. I called before I opened the box to have them do a "package contents" search based on the tracking number. I thought I would get two boxes considering the value of the coins, which the mint usually does. I did not want to open the box if it did not contain everything it should so I called the mint to see what they wanted me to do (i didn't want someone thinking I was stealing from them) and she said I could fill out a form stating that the contents of the box were not as described. While I had her on the phone, I went ahead and opened it. Everything was in the box.

To give some insight to what you are dealing with, the lady I spoke with said if what I had ordered was not in the box as it should be, they would give me a refund. I think someone returned the coins you got without coins in the boxes. I sure hope the mint employees are searching every box they get back to check the contents.

If you call the mint and state what happened, they will make it right for you.
  • had this happen to me a few years ago. called the mint and was never made right by themimage and as such have never purchased from them again

This is the exact reason I don't like keeping and selling unopened boxes.

will NEVER buy an unopened mint box from another. i doubt many sellers would honor a refund/return if I just told them the box they sent me ended up being empty!!!

Also, i imagine a submitter would have a problem submitting sealed boxes to PCGS for first strike if PCGS said they were empty upon arrival!!!

I'm sure it doesn't happen too often though.... I hope...
  • "When doing a credit card chargeback, do they charge you a fee for this service ?"

No... however the CC company will do an investigation for you doing the chargeback and if found in your favor you will get your money back from the CC company... the CC company will asses a fee of $35 plus the amount of chargeback from the business in question. The buisness in question can then turn you over to a collections agency for non payment... this is one of the reasons why when some people get turned down for a loan they see a charge for x amount of dollars from a while back that they can not recall. If you do a chargeback and the business turns you over to a collections agency it may not show up for a few years afterwards.
