How did this coin aquire such wild toning?

I picked this dime out of a dealers junk box (for I think 50 cents) just out of curiosity. The pictures are a good representation of how the coin looks in hand. I'm guessing someone was working on their AT skills and this was one of the early experiments. It doesn't look like a taco bell napkin or frying pan job based on other examples I've seen and I'm wondering what could have caused this effect - any ideas?

Ok....OP asks if folks have ideas on how the coin got toned and all that was said so far was "AT".
Not really that helpful as he already stated he thought it was AT.

If anyone recognizes it as certain types of AT, I am sure that would be more helpful. image

A better title for the thread would be..."What type of AT tone did this coin acquire to be so wild looking."

The people that answered AT were responding to the thread title I believe.

My answers are AT and I do not know.

Fair enough, Ken, but in that case, it is too bad that people don't read before they post (more than just the title).

I would agree with you on AT but I, as well, don't know how, so I wasn't going to just post "AT".

The closest I can surmise, based on experiments I have performed, is a heated (about 120 degrees) box with a mixture of dilute gunpowder, peroxide, tincture of sulfur and alcohol. Are there other mixtures that will do this? Sure, I am just basing my input on experiments I have done... and I had a dime come out very similar to that one. Cheers, RickO

Go to the local magic store/costume store and purchase some stink bombs. Find a little wooden box and place the coin inside, crack the stinkbomb vial open and place by the coin, close the lid. Check the coin in 3 to 5 minutes. Coins will generally tone fast. Sometimes a quick dip in ezzest before you start will speed the tonning up.

You can place the coin in tin foil and turn the oven broiler on and watch the coin tone.

You can take a sabbed coin and get a wood box, drill a small hole the size of a basketball needle and run some argon gas mixed with powered sulfur from the local drug store mixed with rubbing achol and turn the valve on slowly, check often. It works better to use a hot plate with the wood box sitting on a pie pan, cookie sheet or something similiar to keep the box warm.

You can always just email manofcoinsimage

You can place coin on top of hot water heater for many months

In a attic with coin in colored envelopes, or old craft envelopes

    etc.

Since the coin is clad I wonder if it reacts like a silver coin. It's well known that silver reacts with any of several forms of sulfur to tone in shades of red and blue, but do clad coins do the same?

One person told me he had seen silver coins left in boxes of wood matches look like this one, but he didn't know about clad.
