I haven't seen you around here lately, but I sure see that hasn't stopped you from buying some great looking coins.

I dig the look of AU58s, but for the price I'd rather have a 53 or 55.

What I don't like about a $600 Isabella, is that for about $240 more one could get a MS 63, a much nicer looking specimen.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one. $240 more is a 40% price increase for a coin that probably doesn't look that much better. And in this specific case, look at the coin, it's a beauty....might be awhile before you find a 63 like that.

  • I ain't big on quarters, I ain't big on commems, and I sure ain't big on toners, but I'd be all over that AU58 Isabella like a duck on a junebug.

    nice coin you nabbed there...

I like AU58s. I hope to have many in my circ. lincoln set before I'm done.

I can see both sides of this argument. There are probably plenty of MS63 Isabellas
that look this nice, and the premium isn't really very much compared to many
other coins when going from 58 to 63. Kinda just depends on how much money
    you want to spend.

The real trick with 58s is to find a 64 or 65 coin with rub... image

I don't like sending in an obvious MS 61/62 early date walker, and having it come back slabbed in a 58 holder!

Here is an AU58 that I picked up last week from the Scotsman auction. It has better luster than the image shows.

    imageimage
  • I actually prefer AU58 for coins that I wanna keep. An AU58 coin will still have great detail but you just know that it was carried around in pockets and was actually used in commerce by people who are no longer alive.

    I just think that’s cool.

AU 58s are some of the most attractive coins around!

Technical Grading is significantly different from Commercial
Grading yet BOTH still boil down to matters of opinion. image
  • Here's one from my toned Morgan set, 1892-S PCGS AU58 and nicer than most MS60 to MS62 coins that I've seen for this date !!!

    image
  • Au's have little to no chance of a downgrade. Very safe. MS stuff is all over the place especially when crossing. That AU Morgan is sweet.
  • CoxeCoxe Posts: 11,139
I don't like AU58 when it comes up in my grades that I though would go MS. But in general, I love AU58. There is so much value there. Want to make an impressive set? Patiently cherrypick the finest AU58 examples for a 19th century type set. Bet it would have much more eye appeal than most strictly UNC ones and for a small fraction of the cost. Great way to spend several years in the hobby too!

Do many sellers crack out AU 58's and sell them as raw 63's ?

    I also will take a true AU 58 over a 60 anyday.

... it wouldn't surprise me if some didn't end up in Third World Slabs ( I won't mention any names) and sold that way.

  • Sweet Mother of Trade Dollars, that's got the look...

Sometimes AU55 can be as good as AU58 with more character...

    So let's open it up to 55 & 58...

  • Morning all...

Sometimes I think the grading services default to 58 way to much and that's the problem with technical grading, it's black or white. You would think eye appeal would come into the mix somewhere in the process but maybe I should keep my mouth shut and live off the fat of the land..."-)

Did some digging in the safe last night, knew I had some 58's somewhere..."-)

    Here's a real treat and she's a O-105 - R4 to boot...

PS... Excuse the quick photos but I was also having a few drinks as I was digging..."-)
