WHY ARE CARDS SELLING WAY BELOW SMR?

I'm seeing: 1) a lot of sports cards selling way below their SMR estimated value, and 2) fewer auction listings for the more expensive cards like PSA 4s, 5s, or 6s of Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb, DiMaggio, etc. Why? The economy?

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

I would disagree making a blanket statement that cards are selling well below SMR. High Grade cards are selling WELL above SMR and VCP averages and in some cases, setting VCP high's for the grade. Off the top of my head over the last ten days:

    1. 1969 Reggie Jackson PSA 8 sold for $888
    2. 1959 Bob Gibson PSA 8 sold for $902.53
    3. 1967 Tom Seaver PSA 8.5 sold for $1550.00
    4. 1954 Ernie Banks PSA 8 sold for $2411.56

I would say that the high end vintage market is in very good shape or maybe its just the cards I am trying to acquire are going for a premium.

You know, I do agree with you that my blanket statement that all cards are selling below their SMR estimated value is not 100% accurate. I do see many nice cards go for over their book value. But, I see many more, especially less than $100 vintage cards go below book. For example, I've been looking at 1961 Topps baseball minor HOFers like Gibson, Drysdale, Mathews, Musial, Banks, etc., in PSA 7, and they have been selling for less, and considerably less in some instances, than book value. As for the higher dollar vintage cards, it just seems like I don't see as many quality cards, such as 1933 Goudey Ruth #53 or #149 or T206 Cobb green listed for auction in PSA 4, 5, or 6, as I did several months ago. Many nice cards like these are now listed, it seems, with Buy It Now and not straight out auction.

I might add that the cards you mentioned as going above book were PSA 8. The PSA 7's and 6's and 5's seem to go below book many times. Thanks for your thoughts.

I would have to assume that the MSLive cashback has had a significant impact on the realized prices of some higher end graded cards.

I would agree with you Bill, but the 4 auctions I stated were all straight up auctions, with NO BIN.

SMR is antiquated and not based on any reality. VCP value is the product of realized sales.
Suggest you throw out SMR and stop letting it mislead you.

I agree...in fact I'm retired and have been admiring my cards...however I had to find a part time job so I could list some items on ebay...couldn't afford the listing fees and buyer premiums anymore

On the other hand these 1969 Lou Brock PSA 8s sold well below the $700-$1000 they usually bring (the higher figure for well centered copies.)

This one was really nicely centered.
    Brock 1

This isn't bad but it's a little toward the top and there might be a slight tilt.

High grade 69 Brock's are like low pop commons - their value is expected to drop steadily as the pops increase. This is why people shouldn't pay huge premiums for low pop post-war cards unless they can afford to lose most of what they spend.

I think the economy is part of the reason, I think a small part is due to VCP prices realized. because everyone wants the card cheaper than what the last person got it for, not taking into consideration the centering color, ect ect. PSA is part of the problem too because of the new grading system of 1/2 point grades. Ebay is also part of the problem with higher fees, where your item is listed based upon your DSR, ect ect. SO in Ending I blame everyone except myself, the booze and the Hookers.
