Anyone planning to give out coins for Halloween?

I'm thinking about it, but I'm not sure which ones to give out (State Quarters, Kennedy Halves or Prez Dollars). And if I do will the word get out and I'll be overrun with trick or treaters (and many repeats)?

What do you think about this?

We had some neighbors that used to give out coins when I was a kid but it was pennies and nickels!

I may give out Silver Dollars to every child that shows up!

I can say this since I am very isolated and the only kids that ever show up are the two neighbor kids!

I need to add that any adults that show up will get razzed mercilessly cause it'll only be those Sacramento forum members looking for a hand out!

This comes up about every year and so far, the thoughts have been that, given many are no little kids, or that the little kids have older siblings, one could be opening themselves up to have their house broken into by folks looking for more "valuable" coins.

I had thought about it a few years ago (I have a lot of wheat cents and already give out buffs/mercs/wheats/Ikes/Prez$ to kids of friends) but I won't be doing it at Halloween. No need to invite potential trouble.

This is actually a good idea. I don't think the coins need to be so valuable. I'm thinking about giving out a few steel cents to each trick-or-treater.

Last year I threw some Kennedy and Ikes as well as a bunch of dateless buffalos in with the candy...

If you have the coins in hand when you grab the candy they never know what they have... You have to be
swift with the plastic buckets though... Too much noise when dropped in those if they are not somewhat full..

I have 2 rolls of nickels ready again this year.... My daughter spent the last few hundred Ikes I had shopping
this summer....

There used to be two neighbors who did this. Once taped a worn kennedy to the back of a reese cup and gave that out, the other gave out dateless or worn common date buffalo nickels.

Unfortunately, it wasn't until the one who gave out buffalo nickels moved was it that i learned that he was a grader at ANACS, and is currently at PCGS doing VAM attributions last i heard.

Agree. Not a good idea to let all the kids (and their crack addict older brothers) in the neighborhood that you are a coin collector.

And I expect, keeping those Kennedy's that are taped to the back! Yum Yum!

Chocolate, expecially Resse's cups have no place in my house as they simply do not stand a chance of survival!

And I've got the belly to prove it!

Wow... some of you folks must live in rough and tumble neighborhoods. I gave out coins to the first ten trick-or-treaters last year with no repurcussions and will probably do the same this year too. The first few were small children but there were also a few of around middle school age as well. I gave out Indian Head Cents, Buff Nickels, and Merc Dimes... nothing of any real value, but just hoping to spark an interest in the hobby. I gave out the coins in 2x2 flips with a piece of candy taped to it. I treated it like any other piece of candy and just put it into their respective bags... many of these kids didn't even look, but I did overhear one exclaim...COOL! But I live in Flagstaff AZ too... I don't live in Compton CA

C'mon.......kids dont want coins. All they want is CANDY, CANDY, AND MORE CANDY! So pick up a few bags of Kit Kats, Snickers and Reeses and call it a day. Save your coins.

I give out Ikes to every kid that shows up and even to their parents!

I live in a retirement community so just get the grandkids visiting. Or, maybe
they know I give money. I did get one kid that got his dollar then went around
the corner and took off his mask and sword and tried to come back as a "new
superman". Haha, didn't work.

I have not trick or treated in over a decade (I think 96 was the last...) and I remember getting coins in the past. I seem to recall getting several small coins (cents and nickels) wrapped in aluminum foil. I liked them best, as I got to spend them on something I really wanted! I'm not a big fan of candy (not something you would guess by looking at me!) and most of it sat around for a while and got thrown out. (Or my dad would take it-he'd eat anything!)

I plan on flipping a coin and every time it lands on heads I'll eat a snickers bar--guess I'll be getting nice and fat at the end of the month.

Dang- cool neighbors! My neighbors always handed out those awful root beer barrels.
