thats ok learn from your mistakes....

I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.

  • My first submission with U.S. type coins was 4 for 8. 4 of the coins were BBed for cleanings or altered surfaces. Practice, practice, practice is all it takes. If you are considering buying a raw coin and there is ANY doubt at all in your mind as to its originality, just assume its been cleaned/altered, then pass or play depending on the price asked.

Perhaps you can post pictures prior to submittal, next time. It's very likely to save money using this method, and you will get brutally honest opinions, too.

Those damn dippers. If a old gold/copper coin looks to good to be true it's probably clean. Damn those dippers.image

Cleaned does not always come back as cleaned on a resubmission unless these were obvious cleanings.

I have resubmitted coins that were bagged as "cleaned" which I knew had not been cleaned and they graded the second time around.

The altered surface is a different story though. Try to figure out what they are basing their opinion on. It is, after all, only a professional "opinion".

The quoted time is 21 business days for the complimentary collectors club submission.
  • PCGS received my submission on 9/25 and posted the grades exactly two weeks later on 10/9. When my coins are returned I will upload photos of the "problem coins." Thanks everyone for your suggestions on practice and resubmitting the coins. After I post the coins I might try submitting again based on your suggestions. Otherwise, I will offer them on the BST boards with problems noted.

Reminds me of my first submission... unfortunately...

I thought I had bought some awesome coins and had practically stolen them from the seller at the price I paid!

3 out of 4 bodybagged... 2 as improperly cleaned and the other as artificial color

Looking back though, for the prices I paid, the coins weren't really that bad and I realized that I liked them enough to buy in the first place and that I still liked the look of them regardless of what the third party grader thought in their review.

The coins you have that bagged still look nice to me. As long as you didn't pay full retail and that you still like your coins then image
  • Looks like they were rough on you.
  • Poop happens. Keep those coins in the BB flips, and look at them everyday for two or three weeks. Figure out what to look for. Spin them around under a good incandencent bulb. Put them away, and then repeat the next day. Do this enough times and you will turn the money you spent on BB'ed coins into a pretty darn good educational opportunity.

The cleaned coins I can see......
But I kept looking at the nickels for cleaning when I re-read the grades.....Altered Surface! imageimage

I will NEVER like that 'reason' to BB, nor 'Questionable Color'.
Why can TPG list definative reasons like Cleaned, Whizzed, AT, Tooled, etc.
These are things we can see & learn from.
Questionable color is just wrong....either it NT or AT....they're the experts, make a call.
Altered Surface, just what is that?
If we didn't see it when we sent it in, why would we see it now? Not even an opportunity to learn IMO.

    Maybe it's just me.

  • Keep sending them in. Eventually they will grade. Of course by then you will have spent many times the worth of the coin.

  • Well, at least now you know what altered surfaces and cleaned coins look like. Perhaps go through a dealer next time so they can weed out the altered and cleaned coins for you. I would not resubmit these coins hoping for a grade.

  • Yikes.. I feel your pain... Of course if you resubmit them after 12/01/08 at least you'll get those 6 in PCGS slabs labeled "genuine".

Doesn't help in figuring out how badly we got hosed by the seller though.

i dont get this "altered surface" thing. the V nickel and buffalo look fine to me
  • Tough to say on the V. Looks fine in the pic. But altered surfaces can be very hard to detect and may only be visible when tilted at a certain angle. I think that cleanings are pretty obvoius, though. I don't think that they really had a chance to slab.

I would recommend spending some time really looking at coins that are slabbed. It should help you get a feel for what will slab.

    Good luck.

    edited for spelling.

    merse

  • I see many many coins already slabbed that look cleaned etc. Its a crap shoot.

Thanks for posting the BB's >they clearly are not holderable. the Nickle looks questionable at best.

Learn from the post, and submission , and apply this to future purchases. It will take time to learn what to look for !

I have resubmitted coins that were bagged as "cleaned" which I knew had not been cleaned and they graded the second time around.

A bargain at twice the price? Or is it free if you complain about the first time soundly enough to get the cleaned coin graded the second time around?

I once sent a 1910 Liberty Nickel in with a submission and it came back BB'ed for artificial color. I disagreed and sent it back for review and it was BB'ed for artificial color. About a year or so ago, I sent it in on a Collectors club free quarterly submission, and it was returned in an MS63 holder.
