I've found lots of pocket watch cases, and lots of assorted pocket watch guts like that, but dangit, never a complete watch! (Except for one small, relatively modern pocket watch that was actually probably worn as a ladies' pendant).

I'm not Randy, but I've been interested in the hobby for some time but have never made the jump. I live in historic Charleston, SC but my little bit of research shows a lot of prohibitive "stuff" to deal with...other than the beaches, it seems very difficult to be able to "legally" hunt. Do you know of any good websites or sources of information (besides this forum)? I've just begun looking at this forum so I haven't picked up on a lot yet.
You sure are in a prime area, but as you mentioned, finding places to legally dig is challenging! I noticed that when I visited your fair city. Same's true of Savannah. They too have local ordinances against detecting in the parks and public places. It sounds like you need to cultivate some contacts with private property owners, and maybe offer 'em some goodies in return for the privilege of detecting their property.
As to other websites, there is findmall.com and treasurenet, both large, interesting, and multifaceted sites.
On a much smaller and more humble scale (even smaller than this fine and friendly little community here) is my own treasure hunting forum.

I've found some watches with a helluva lot of gears in 'em, though.
Edit to add- I am also wondering what the bluish circular object in the bottom right of the photo is... looks to have some modern digital numerals on it, so I assumed it had nothing to do with the artifact in the photo?

It looks like a digital scale that the pieces are sitting on...perhaps they weigh 26.6 grams?
