What was Pcgs thinking when they slabbed this 1813 CBH?

I maybe wrong, but I think this 1813 Capped Bust half dollar has been harshly cleaned and can't understand why Pcgs slabbed it as XF-45.Here's the Heritage link, look and see if you think it got by the grader.1813

I would venture to say that you are correct about the harshly cleaned in a big way.

She's a beauty. PCGS graded it, therefore it must be so.image

I really think those are some of the worst images of a coin that they have done in a long time.

Obviously, they knew it was cleaned. Therefore, you can assume that they thought it was decent enough to give it a net grade. From the picture, I can't tell if I agree with them.

I believe the pictures are awful too. They should just send the coins to me to image, I can get better pics in about 30sec. image

I noticed that coin before it came up for auction, while still in the preview auction mode. My comment was "Terrible! NO BID".

This coin could well be one of the PCGS "mechanical errors". A PCGS worker could have somehow gotten off a line on the submission form.

I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

I see nothing unusual here. The only thing that might be different is you can see what the coin might look like. Naw, must be a bad image. Put some blue around the periph and folks love them. And the sticker mill seems to like them as well.image

WOW !!! Either the pic is terrible, or the slab is fake...
  • give it a few years in an album or on top of the water heater, wrapped in colored sulfur paper and you will have one nice toned bust half - remember folks, back in the good ole days it was an accepted procedure to "clean" your coins - I dont get what the fuss is about - everyone each to their own - cleaned or not, I still like the coin for what it is and it looks like the PCGS grader liked it too!!

PCGS and NGC love to silently net grade these things, instead of telling the truth on them. sad really

  • Yes, collectors were expected to maintain their coins by polishing them as you would your silver tea service. It may be more appropriate to say you would place a premium on Capped Bust Halves that AREN'T cleaned.

But I must agree, the image makes this piece appear exceptionally distasteful.

Yep. If the same coin had peripheral toning there'd be a thread raving about how fantastic it is.

She does look to have been net graded.

I suspect that she looks better in hand, but not in sunlight! I am glad there is a market for coins like this. Sure she's got no crust and may have been a wonder to behold if never wiped but I hope she finds a home that appreciates her, hairlines and all.
  • Just as a comparison.

    NGC Made the same mistake?

Both of those coins look pretty bad,but I wouldn't be surprised if they look different in hand.Last year, before the Fun show,

I looked at the bust halves I was interested in,made notes,THEN went to the lot viewing.WOW what a difference in the in-hand comparison

vs. the Heritage pics.Try it sometime,it made me change my online buying habits, especially with questionable pics.
