first spouse gold economics

I know nothing about the first spouse coins, but I see that the Madison half ouncer unc has a lower price that other half ouncers.

could someone kindly explain the pros and cons of buying the spouse coins as a "gold play" and/or a "numismatic play."

or if they should not be played, please explain why.

many thanks.

I don't know that I'm an expert except for the fact that I've closely followed these since they've been released. Most would probably tell you that these are a poor investment from a bullion standpoint until the price of gold rises--at which time the Mint will probably pull them and reprice them higher, still making them a poor bullion investment. And almost everyone considers these dead in the water from a numismatic perspective. Personally, the sales have dropped so low that I think some of them eventually will be quite sought-after--if you can swallow the current premium. If you just want some extra gold, you're probably better off buying gold eagles or, as you indicated, the Madison, which was released earlier and at a lower price. The only one I've bought is the proof Jeff, just because I really loved the design. My guess is that it will NEVER command a numismatic premium, but I like looking at it. Hope that helps.

U.S. Mint products are authentic. They are plentiful in this market. As numismatics are concerned, they (gold spouse coins) are not struck deeply and they really are not that attractive. I would say as a "gold play", the market is ripe for the picking.
I do not think they will ever see much interest as a collectible. They are a hedge against inflation.
The gold spouse program was a flop from the beginning as the Mint tried to dissuade "flippers" by limiting what could be bought. Remember these had limits and only 40,000 so the idea was to get them to collectors and keep dealers and flippers from marketing them.
Now they have a product that nobody wants since they tried to eliminate the flippers and sell it at a premium above spot. They didn't expect the financial sector of the world to collapse and take gold down with it. So, in essence they shot their old lady !

I like the Jefferson's Liberty design VERY much. I picked up a PCGS PR69DCAM yesterday, and with the Microsoft 30% discount, the price was $371 shipped for a half ounce of certified gold. Now I'm watching for a sweet deal on a proof Jackson. Let's not lump the classic designs in with the regular ladies. It might be an unloved series, but it has highlights.image
