I know what NGC says, but what would you grade this 89cc?

Amazing piece of history there! With so few being minted many, many had PL surfaces. This one
obviously exhibited that trait. Wow, preserved no nicely. I would say that it is an AU55 with a
possible PL designation. Not too shabby a coin!

    Listen to Cameron.
Look at IGWT on the reverse for proof.

It's going to need a lot more thumbs on it to get a thumbs up on it. Please send it to me so I can physically examine it image

  • AU-58. I don't believe it's been cleaned, judging from the pics. It appears there are many hairlines, but I believe they are random.

IF it graded I was say a 55.

Something going on with the cheeks. Not sure what.
Also above the eagle's head, doesn't look like a normal 'hit'.
Lastly, the 'wear' above ONE DOLLAR looks also looks strange to me.

If it BB I would say environmental damage.

But keep in mind I don't think I've ever been right with these guessing games.

The darkness in the unprotected areas of the fields and on the high points of the design elements indicates loss of luster due to rub, wear, curculation or whatever so I say 55. A 58 would look "almost uncirculated" and not have that amount of rub.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    AU55

What's the porosity on the cheek all about?
    When in doubt, don't.
  • I'll say 55

Dial 911, a little doctoring and it has a better shot at sitting in plastic.

AU55 and I think its pretty obvious the coin is sitting in plastic. I don't know what everyone else is looking at.

I thought about pvc damage on the cheek but the OP leads me to believe that NGC has graded it so that precluded anything else other than a market acceptable slabbed coin.

  • Very obviously cleaned. Also looks like it's in a slab. Although the white balance is pretty poor. If NGC is on its toes... it's in an NCS slab Unc. Details improperly cleaned. But it's probably in an NGC AU slab.

It is clearly not original, but not as bad as what has been holdered... 53-55 seems okay

It certainly is no more cleaned than the typical "white" silver coin of that age that gets slabbed all the time. Some of the Carson City issues had a rough life even though technically UNcirculated...during various moves and audits some of the 80 year old canvas bags would become rotten through dampness and when picked up, the coins
spill all over a concrete floor...be scooped up with snow shovels and run through a counting machine and be rebagged.

Sorry, but there's no conclusive proof of cleaning that can be gleaned from the photo alone. I see naturally disturbed semi-PL surfaces and am going to say 58 like many others. The cheek looks like it was hit by buckshot, so maybe 55 is a better grade.

Since wear is obvious then AU55.
