  • It's fair. It's not a steal at that price, but you wouldn't be getting ripped off if you purchased them.

  • Try to sell common date $5 libs in AU grade and you will find out they are STRICTLY bullion based. Pass.

Seems to be the going rate.

I'm sure dealers would try for closer to bullion.
  • At .2419 oz of gold, the coin melts at $204.40 with gold at $845. Generic gold such as this can be bought easily at about 3%-5% above melt value. At 5% above melt, the coin would be a fair purchase at $215. Dont get eaten by the wolves who offer this coin at $250.

if they are slabbed by pcgs i think that is a fair price more or less.
raw.. not such a great buy.

Raw circ generic 5libs are good for jewlery. It's an effective way to spend money but not much more.

edit: save your money and buy a type I $20.

If you're buying it for gold and it's not a rare date raw or slabbed it should be less than $250. Even that price you're paying well over $1000 an ounce.
When selling expect melt so you loose about $150.

I got an email from a large dealer offering $275 each (bid) for VFs this afternoon. Sounds like a good deal to me. Premiums on US gold are way, way up at the moment.

Any qualifiers, such as a specific spot basis for that buy price? There usually are. If you were able to confirm any at $275 when spot dropped this afternoon to the low $820's, I'd say you made a nice deal.

Folks here are saying it's easy to get them at $215, show me where to buy them at that price?

They are full of it. Greysheet is around $290 for an AU58. Back off $10 for decline in gold today, another $20 or so for certification, and $250 looks pretty fair if the coin is problem free.

I have an XF for sale in the BST at near melt that no one's touching. I figured it would be snapped up in 15 minutes.

If they can be bought that easily I don't know why Heritage would be paying $285 for them ($305 sell). And that was at $887 gold. At $850 knock another $10 off. In any case, $250 was very fair. You aren't buying these at small premiums to melt unless the seller is unaware of what the market is. The BST is not an indicator of the generic gold market. $250 for a $5 Lib is much more reasonable than all the people that were touting platinum coins at $1800-$2500.
The real deal for $5 Libs was when MS62's were down to around $300 a couple of weeks ago. They are now back into the upper $300's.

Local B&M here in Maryland is close, offering them for $220.

  • This 1907 $5 Liberty was on my watch list and closed at $288 plus $8, for a PCGS AU55, even with the big drop in gold on Friday. For certified with a decent look $250 sounds very fair.

    ebay $288

Notice the key word here is RAW. $250 for a RAW common date AU55 is too high. When it comes time to sell, 98% of all dealers will offer at most melt, and likely back of melt.

My local B&M puts little to no premium on circulated half eagles. He had a load of Indains and Libertys earlier in the week when I was in there. $220 for libs and $250 for Indians

Most of those buying on the Bay preferred certified. My post was information for those kind of buyers. Many raw coins are not in the nicer AU category, many are more like VF to XF or low AU.

  • I was at the cincy show at sharonville convention center a couple of weeks ago and that is exactly what all the dealers were asking for certified libs in AU50 to 58. The cheapest I saw one was $235 for an AU 58 and one dealer had a couple OGH AU50's for $270, but most all the others was $250.

The OP wanted a fair estimate of price on RAW coins, not certified. You guys are using apples to make your arguments, but we are talking about oranges.

The bid that I reported was for raw VFs (gold was at $870 when the email was sent out).

Does Heritage post generic gold buy prices online? If so, I cannot find them.

$250 is a fair price for raw coins. The coins that are offered very close to bullion price are almost always the (wink wink) jewelry coins.
