Does Toning get a premium?

I been thinking of selling an extra 1913 NGC MS64 Type 1 Buffalo Nickel that I have. Watching the sales of said nickels on EBay and the prices have been between $55-$75. I saw this: LINK

and was curious as to the price. It's at $76 with 3 days to go.

Is it the toning, mint, both, what?

It's a combination of the color, the photos, and the seller, who has been selling
such material on eBay for many years and has a huge audience.

The rush for toned coins, has seemed to have
moderated over the past year. Possibly due to
the fickle nature of collectors, the sky high
prices of such material or the growing concern
about doctoring of a number of such toned coins.

  • Natural tone vs artificial tone is a question that will probably be argued for a long time. I have seen nicely toned (what I would think are natural) not sell even for what a blast white or dipped example might sell for....and have seen ridiculously obvious doctored coins sell for 20X more! There seems to be nothing consistent to answer this question.
  • The answer to your questions is yes as long as someone finds the toning to be eye appealing.

It's the seller, he's a highly respected board member and people love to bid his auctions.
Personally I don't think that nickel is anything to get excited over but that's just my opinion.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • The mintmark will make a large difference in this one.

    In MS64:
    The 1913-P type 1 Bids at $57.
    The 1913-D type 1 Bids at $85.
    The 1913-S type 1 Bids at $195.

That particular toning on that 13-D type 1 should bring a premium over the $85 because the colors are positively appealing.

Toning does command a premium according to some of the prices I have seen advertised in COIN WORLD. Looks like double or tripled the price over an untoned piece.
