    i'm guessing just standard tool marks from punching the planchet from a strip as not much concern get's applied to the edge

    The marks are probably post mint damage. Maybe someone jammed it into a hole it shouldn't have been jammed into...

    I can clearly see the word "TEST". This is obviously a very rare edge lettering trial piece.

  • I first thought early reeded edge on a Capped Bust Half as I had owned one that looked just like this. I have always thought that there must have been store or shop saloon owners that would have taken a little silver or gold off the edge of the coins that passed thru their hands.

    Imagine how much they could have accumulated doing this with silver or gold. I guess if I had lived in the 1800 I would have done it!

    Now I better go check the edges of my FEs
