Labeled as a 1818 Capped Bust Half Dollar in say, oh, XF-45...did the graders miss the 7 under the 8, is it really there?

Pure speculation on my part....this ones a brain teaser.

    Let us know.

    35 or 40

Average them up, you've got more graders/ experience here for a consensus then PCGS uses.

    40.

45 wouldn't surprise me. The reverse looks 45+ to me.

VF35... But you expected an EF45...
  • I was thinking VF30 on the details but the luster bumps it up some more...it's worth XF money
  • To all of you who went for 40, I agree with you, but no cigar. PCGS graded the coin a 35!!!
    Tally:

using lowest number if given a range:
    grade/votes
    40.......25 -1 because Rocco changed his mind = 24
    35.......18 including Rocco's
    45.......8
    30.......3
    20.......2
    50.......2
    15.......1

The "real grade" is about 30 to 35. I expect PCGS said 35 to 40.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I am late in seeing this thread, but my first impression was PCGS 35. I do not think it quite makes XF, due to the wear it shows.

Certainly would expect NGC 40 minimum.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

The "real" grade is always given in dollars, not grading points.

On the contrary, it is the market grade that is given in dollars not the "real" grade.

Note to self: do not ever sell coins to people who said F-15 or VF-20. image

I'm with the VF-35 to XF-40 crowd. I think it is a die marriage with a relatively flat, low-relief design, which make a little bit of wear look like a lot of wear... thus, the large flat spots and remaining mint luster are there at the same time. Tough coin to grade.

It's easier and more accurate if you do this with the built-in poll feature, y'know. That way folks have to vote before they can see what everybody else voted. And you ain't gotta count it all up. I think more "guess the grade" threads should be in poll format.
