<< <i>VAMs is simply a plural, not a possessive or contraction. As such it is incorrect to use an apostrophe. >>
I think either way is correct. "VAM" is an acronym, and old-school learning taught us that the ('s) designated plurality, not possessiveness.

i'd be the first to admit english never found high priority as a subject and played such a small role in a life where physics and all things mechanical were focused upon...we as people just can't have it all.
one of albert einsteins greatest quotes was "he regretted the time he spent in books and should of enjoyed the beach moreso"
this was merely testing making a poll thread as well as something i've wondered about as what percentage truly collects them versus just tries to find them for selling reason's only.
i find it surprising that thus far 2 fold collect them over merely just cherry-picking for profit
In 31 years of being a working journalist, plus all of the schooling that went into becoming one, an apostrophe has never been correct for a designation of plurality.

In deference to your educational background and employment history, you may be surprised at that which is considered acceptable today.

Why should that surprise you? It's a lot of fun searching for them. What other coin struck by the U.S. has more than 3000 varieties? You don't have to collect all of them. You can establish your own parameters. Heck, even if you decided just to collect the 1878 varieties, you'd have quite a bit of work ahead of you. To be honest, if I had only the 1878 8TF VAM9, I'd be happy.
I'll admit that there are many VAM's which, in my opinion, shouldn't deserve "Top 100" or "Hot 50" status. Why should a coin that was struck using a rusty die merit that status and be eligible for grading by one of the top grading services? There are so many others that are far more interesting. Some of my 1878 8TF have strong doubling that is really cool, but they're not in either of those categories.

That being said, the die varieties I find in my series I keep for my collection. I have yet to find rare duplicates, but would not be averse to flipping them to finance nicer coins for my collection if I did.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.
Only because if I started I would have to get them all with my OCD.
edited, I do collect the equivalent of VAM's but they are called McCloskey's for classic head half eagles.
Maybe someday, when the basic date/MM set is done...
