When presented with a choice of purchases where the following factors are equal: cost/affordability, condition/grade and collecting goal/set completion, which factor tends to influence you the most in your numismatic purchases:

  • I went with design/aesthetics. The design can make the coin or it can hurt it.

I'd say all 4 play a significant role, but design and historical significance are the biggies for me.

I said "Historical significance" because there wasn't a "Because the coin is cool" category and historical significance seemed the closest.

  • I guess "historical significance" is why I got into collecting. I find that finding needed die marriages is the guiding factor in my collecting currently.

I too was attracted initially (and still, to this day) by coins with historical significance. It's why I don't do moderns much, as appealing as some of them can be.

Don't get me wrong; there are plenty of lovely modern coins that are aesthetically pleasing, and while aesthetics are also very high on my list of important factors (a close second), I generally have to have some history, too, to make a coin more appealing to me. Were I one for aesthetics first and history second, I might be more into moderns, though I'd probably be mostly into Darkside moderns.

In recent years, the financial factor has become far more important to me, particularly as I call myself a full time dealer these days (albeit on a very tiny scale). But my dealer purchases are still driven by my old collecting instincts- I generally prefer to buy stuff that appeals to me personally, unless it is really cheap or has a very high upside potential for a fast flip (turnover).

I voted "historical significance" first, but aesthetics are a close second, and "potential of financial return" is pretty much tied for second place, and becoming increasingly more important to me as I transition from collector to dealer.

I'll always have the heart of a collector, though, even if I make it as a dealer. If I ever lost that spark, I'd quit dealing and do something else.

I voted "historical significance", but only because my first two choices weren't provided as options. My main concern is always going to be "collecting goal", which was taken out of consideration in the poll. After that, my next question would be replaceability: If I don't buy this item now, will I have another chance any time soon? Historical significance comes only after those...

I voted history, but I suspect a little of everything plays a part in my decision...

    Historical significance of the coin...definitely.

The first thing that draws me to a coin is it's look, it's eye appeal, it's thing that
makes you say wow,,,WOW! So I guess my first vote would be Design/aesthetics.

Second would be it's rarity, uniqueness, one of a kind type, or limited type piece that
doesn't come along everyday. Didn't see a catagory for that.

Third would be it's historical significance, but I'm also driven by how interesting the piece is.
Does it have a lot of things going for it, such as errors, RPM, clashes, die lines & cracks, is
the coin a mystery to be solved?
There are probably a number of other factors that could be added to make such a decision.
    Good question. image
