I've always had a soft spot for those big, huge, fat Russian coppers. I had a Siberian one once, which was even chunkier than the regular Russian issues!

    Very cool. image

1776 certainly was a pivotal year, wasn't it. Or maybe that's just our American bias.

While detecting, I dug this holey 1776 Mexico City half-real at a site on St. Simons Island, GA, just a few yards from where General Oglethorpe, founder of the Georgia colony, had his only home in the New World. Of course he was long dead by the time the coin was lost- judging from the other artifacts found on the site, it was dropped sometime in the early 19th century. But oh, the stories it could tell, eh?

I keep it in my detector finds album, and not on my "Holey Coin Vest". But I have a number of others on the HCV that I bought.

The next morning, I went out to the same site and found an even nicer (unholed) 1787, just a few feet away.

But I was quite pleased when my very first 1700s coin find turned out to be a 1776. Not only was that our nation's birthday, it was also 200 years before I started collecting coins in 1976. Though they aren't worth much monetarily, I wouldn't accept a thousand bucks for either of these coins. They're just too sentimentally important to me. I never sell my dug stuff for that reason.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

Great story and talk about and exciting detector find, a 1776.
Hard to believe that anything could be chunkier than these Russian coppers, they
are like a discus and I bet you could throw one as far as a discus.
Thanks for the input and as always, your detector finds are always great to

Does anyone know the dimensions and weight of that awesome russian copper piece?

A monsterous two headed eagle? Holding a holy "hand grenade"? Excellent.

I believe that these average about 40 mm in diameter and are in the 45-50 gram range.
Let me add that this piece is much thicker than the 1795 that I have so these are only
averages. These coins have a gripped edge design and are made approximating round.
