Don't get me wrong; there are plenty of lovely modern coins that are aesthetically pleasing, and while aesthetics are also very high on my list of important factors (a close second), I generally have to have some history, too, to make a coin more appealing to me. Were I one for aesthetics first and history second, I might be more into moderns, though I'd probably be mostly into Darkside moderns.
In recent years, the financial factor has become far more important to me, particularly as I call myself a full time dealer these days (albeit on a very tiny scale). But my dealer purchases are still driven by my old collecting instincts- I generally prefer to buy stuff that appeals to me personally, unless it is really cheap or has a very high upside potential for a fast flip (turnover).
I voted "historical significance" first, but aesthetics are a close second, and "potential of financial return" is pretty much tied for second place, and becoming increasingly more important to me as I transition from collector to dealer.
I'll always have the heart of a collector, though, even if I make it as a dealer. If I ever lost that spark, I'd quit dealing and do something else.
Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

The first thing that draws me to a coin is it's look, it's eye appeal, it's thing that
makes you say wow,,,WOW! So I guess my first vote would be Design/aesthetics.
Second would be it's rarity, uniqueness, one of a kind type, or limited type piece that
doesn't come along everyday. Didn't see a catagory for that.
Third would be it's historical significance, but I'm also driven by how interesting the piece is.
Does it have a lot of things going for it, such as errors, RPM, clashes, die lines & cracks, is
the coin a mystery to be solved?
There are probably a number of other factors that could be added to make such a decision.
Good question.
