Raw versus Certified

Do those that collect only raw coins perceive those that collect only certified coins as having a holdier than thou attitude?

Collecting only coins in slabs is like riding only bikes with training wheels. image

I don't know about holdier than thou, but buying in slabs can prevent you from getting a raw deal. (just couldn't resist).

  • Did you mean to type holdier? because that was kinda funny.

P.S. raw deal isn't bad either.

I like raw and certified coins, but mainly the coin itself. If the coin has some value, I'll have it certified. It's a good way to store them and the registry makes it easy to keep track of the details of the purchase. Like it or not, a PCGS certified coin is more liquid than a raw coin.

I buy them both ways... prefer raw... however, I buy the coin... if it is good, and the price is correct, I buy it. If it is good and the price is ridiculous, I pass. Went back seven times on a coin in a B&M... finally came down to my price...and then I bought it. Never, ever, ever pay stupid money for a coin... Cheers, RickO

there's no difference between raw & cert'd coins once they are in a album.

One of the great half-dime collectors here collects his coins raw. If I had 1/10th of his knowledge, I might consider doing so.

The funny thing is that I buy a lot of coins that I like or need for my collection raw and then submit them for grading. I guess I like to have verification from a 3rd party that there are not major problems with the coin that I haven't noticed.

I am comfortable buying both and don't look down on anyone whose collecting preferences are different from my own.
