The reverse pcgs slab is damaged, not the coin. What grade would you give this one?

I'll take a stab and say EF-40, but tough to tell from those pics.

it's distracting when you over-increase the image contrast like that.

    Fake, or fake?

I'd agree to "...certainly conditionally rare, its a pcgs xf 45 ...pop 7/8
This is true on alot of early U.S. coinage.
When most found are of lesser grade, but still an R-2 coin. (500 - 1000 pieces)

PCGS only recently began to attribute ED's (and other early coinage) by die marriage, when requested. Beware of pop figures when assessing rarity.

Of the 1798 15 stars graded between the 2 major tpg services there are a total of 94 pieces graded by PCGS and 28 by NGC. Thats a total of 122 specimans. If there are 500 to a 1000 coins, where are they?

In EF or better PCGS lists pops 7/8 and NGC lists pops 8/6. Those figures maybe duped from crossovers.

You ask "...If there are 500 to a 1000 coins, where are they?"
    Not slabbed.
