Very very cool and if I had some excess cash I might even bid on some of the lots in this auction. However, I do note that the buyer's premium is 19.5% on these lots!!!! I don't even really like paying the 15% on the coin auctions...
I like the mission flown Apollo 13 Mission Patch. That would be something I'd like, but as others have mentioned, unfortunately it costs "moon money" or in this case "moon orbit money"
No added value - in the near future, you'll be able to fly your entire collection in space.
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.
<< <i>No added value - in the near future, you'll be able to fly your entire collection in space. >>
That is like saying there is no premium for a coin documented to have been on one of Columbus's, Magellan's (or any other early explorer's) ship since in their near future you will have been able to sail your entire collection around the world.
$5,377.50 (the juice is INCLUDED). Oh, and yeah, I bought it...
I'm not sure which astronaut is first in this pic, but his PPK (his personal items carrying kit, e.g. where he would store the gold coin) is the item that is just below his left knee.
Here White is in the foreground and McDivitt is in the background just prior to getting in the capsule. You can just see McDivitt's PPK below his knee. The coin would have been in there.
The launch.
Here's what makes the flight so special...
Now, just purely on the numismatic side of things, this coin is actually in VERY good shape for a flown coin. As you can see by the condition of the Peace dollar that Aldrin brought with him to the Moon, astronauts tended not to give a rat's patootie what a coin looked like. Also, to the best of my knowledge, this is the ONLY space flown GOLD coin from the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo era. So while ~$5,400 is absurd for a standard 1902 $2.50 Liberty in this condition, IMO it is a steal for a gold coin in decent condition flown on a historically significant flight.
Congratulations on "all" your Space winnings Sy. Couldn't be in better hands. One of these days in the near future I'll be over to see your new "museum wing". Very Cool!!
<< <i>I'd rather have an astronaut's autograph. >>
Would 3 of them (well, 5 actually) be enough? Note the date stamp. (For those of you that don't know, that is the day when Armstrong/Aldrin landed on the Moon).
<< <i>Reminds me of my younger cousin. When we were kids growing up in Brooklyn he had a nasty habit of swallowing coins. Mostly cents and nickels. His parents had to ... well... sift through some "stuff" till they found the "offensive" coin. That or it was a trip to the hospital for an X-Ray. Well his parents used to put the aforementioned "offensive" coins in a jar to show him what he did from time to time and I have to say that there were some wildly toned coins in that there jar (I think it was a mayonnaise jar...)
To make this long story short, I would pay the same premium for my cousins old "offensive" coins as I would for a coin flown in spaceJRocco >>
Hey Rocky............ If your cousin is still around, force feed him a bunch of pocket change and when they come out get em toned up good then list them on Ebay. Make some good money off the Toning Nuts.

I cannot help thinking of my favorite cartoon (Bullwinkle) when I read this, except that instead of Bullwinkle Moose saying- "Hey, Rocky- watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat", I could hear JRocco's cousin saying- "Hey, Rocky- watch me pull a coin....."

Most shipwreck gold is far better.
Funny you should mention shipwreck coins, because that is the first thing I though of when veiwing this coin-gimic.
If I wanted the coin, Id pay AU bid. But I don't want it.

The current cost to place something in orbit is around$20,000/pound. It's not coming down much in the near future.
