Another Dunkin Donuts adventure!

  • If you get robbed, it's not as if a thief comes into your house, wipes his feet on the mat, and is careful not to disturb anything but your coin collection.

Your home gets raped, stuff gets broken, thrown about, stolen, and people can get hurt or killed. Maybe you're coins aren't tremendously high on your priority list for safekeeping, but I'd imagine that your wife and child are.

<< <i>This thread has raised an issue about public display, or even talk about coins. I have been quite fortunate in my 33 years to have never been robbed, mugged, or burglurized (with an exception of a car radio or 2). I simply do not have the "fear" that some of you are talking about. Do I want to lose my entire collection? Of course not! If someone WERE to run off with one of my $1,000 coins, would it be a big bummer? Sure would, but it wouldnt be a life changing event in the least. I suppose I could be like some of you and live in fear and secrecy about my collection/life, but thats not my personality at all. What fun is collecting something if you cant talk about it, or show certain items except in bank vaults or private meetings? I suspect that i'd rather be robbed than to live in this type of "confinement". I thoroughly enjoy meeting my dealer/friend in public to discuss coins and look at eachother's newps, even if they are "higher dollar value" items. But then again, I also thoroughly enjoy crawling into a smokey, hot attic at 2am as well. image I love my coins, but I really guess I dont take them as seriously as some of you. Afterall, in 100 years who even cares, we'll ALL be dead! >>

    Gecko,
listen up homey, we all would like and hope to be dead in 100 years, but you could be real dead in 100 seconds, that is all it takes for some young hoodie to pop you and take whatever HE thinks is worth soemthing to support his habit or make a name for himself as a gang initiation rite. I think you are a valuable member and to see you waste your own life due to some stupid beliefs that having a little fear is foolish is dumb. I don't want you to love in fear but use your intelligence and understand it is ok to be fearful at times and play it smart. Enough saidimage >>

What is scarier is that Gecko has a wife and young kid. If word gets out to the wrong folks, there may be a home visit for the big score. A 33-year old fireman isn't going to be afraid for himself, but what about the wife and baby? Most 33-year old cops wouldn't be afraid, but would know better than to act this way. They have heard too many stories. Would a person ever forgive himself if something happened at home and the wife or baby were hurt, and the police tied it back to one of the donut shop acquaintances?

Do you peel off a $100 off a big roll to pay for the donut too? And wear a $15k Rolex plus $100k earrings and chains? All of this would be flat out stupid behavior that any reasonable person would say the guy was a fool for acting that way in a rough part of town, unless he owned that part of town.

I'm gonna chime in here and agree, gecko, you are only setting yourself up for a lot of unwelcome trouble... not smart.
  • Ok guys.....from this point forward I will limit all showing/talking of coins to 1 of just 4 places. Here on the forum, inside a bank vault, at a coin show, or in my home. Thanks for showing me the "correct" way to enjoy my hobby. Dont forget people....there once was a collector who carried 1 of the 5 1913 liberty nickels around in his pocket and showed it off in taverns. Wonder if he was ever robbed?

The McDermott 1913 Liberty Nickel is a poor comparison. First of all, it's the type of coin that's so rare that if stolen, it would instantly be on the "hot list" and it would be difficult to unload without attracting attention. It also was not made of gold... the most recognized valuable substance in the world.

Nobody's telling you how to live your life. We just don't think that laying gold out on the table at a Dunkin Donuts is good idea.

By all means, if you want to be an idiot, no one can stop you from fulfilling that destiny.

<< <i>State ownership of coffee and donut places... think how that could reduce the deficit...imageimage >>

The free doughnuts to officials would bankrupt us in a second.
