Which would you rather have? (pattern coin, or nice grouping of type)

One of these ?

http://uspatterns.com/j561p622.html

OR

A 1795 half dollar in PCGS 8 (very PQ) and
An 1806 half dollar in PCGS 30 (with rim color) and
An 1892 quarter in NGC 64 (blast white)?

That nickel pattern has been one of my obsessions since I first came across patterns. Both groups are very close in terms of dollar value, which would you rather have?

The pattern. I like those, too.
  • About 18 months ago, I had just sold my 2002 Camaro sports car with the intent of growing my coin collection. The car had become obsolete to my new lifestyle (new baby) so rather than watch it simply devalue each year in the garage, I chose to put that money "to work". Anyway, I had about $13,000 to play with and already a list as long as my arm of what I wanted to add to my collection. The bulk of the money went into a 12 piece gold type set. I did however have about $3,500 that was in limbo, and considered buying an ultra rare silver standard quarter struck in copper (the Judd number escapes me now). Before taking the plunge, I contacted our very own Julian Leidman about the purchase, he was not the seller, but someone I knew I could trust with advice. He confirmed that there were only a half dozen known examples and took the time to ask more about my existing collection. After a few emails back and forth, he advised that the coin simply did not fit the rest of my collection, so I thanked him and passed on that pattern. Now the time has come where I no longer collect U.S. type, and sacrificing those 3 pieces to own a true rarity of a coin I love is a possibility.
  • Easy answer for me...

Type sets are where my true love of coins lies.

    Specifically "Darkside" gold type sets..

Patterns don't call out to me at this point in my life.

I'd take the pattern, assuming it's one of the ones listed with mintages in the dozen range. I collect some British halfpenny patterns and even a MS61 or 62 , in a piece with a mintage of less than 20, impresses me more than a 65 for a standard issue piece with mintages in the tens or hundreds of thousands.
  • I would go for the first (2) types you listed but I'd gladly exchange the quarter for an earlier type.

Its give or take in the 100 mintage range.

Type coins. Coins that were never designed for circulation do not excite me.

Seems to me you obviously want the pattern. Buy what makes you happy.

So very sweet. What would the 561 cost me in 63 or 64?

  • Thanks RYK. So I might even come up short with my type coins moneywise. I really didnt care for the fields on that most recent sale, the ANACS 63.

This is what I'd be looking at if I were in the market for a five cent pattern...

    A pattern like this:

    image

Has a lot going for it, it is utilising the hubs from the older Large Cents, struck on cupro-nickel, dated 1868. Resembling the Large Cent as much as it does it is a bit of an oddity. I had wanted one of these since I read about them when I was a kid. This piece is J-647, the cupro-nickel variety, J-648 is the copper variety.

Of the choices given in the OP, I'd take the pattern.

But if I could choose between any pattern coin or any nice grouping of type, I'd choose the type coins.

I want to own a pattern very badly, so I'm taking the pattern.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
