MS70 cleaner on MS coins

Will using MS70 on MS coins keep that coin from being graded by any of the major Grading Companies? It would be on some 1950 Quarters with some water marks on them! And I honestly think a few may make MS67 without the marks.

No I dont think I'm going to try anything untill I hear from some people about MS70. Its supposedly doesnt affect the luster on MS coins when used properly. I'm just worried about the Grading.

i'm not a big fan of MS70 and don't advise ever using it on any coin. from what i know about it i don't think it would help the spots you're talking about, either.

I wouldn't use MS70 on anything other than MS silver or gold coins. In your case, I doubt it will remove "water spots" on silver quarters, but it will not hurt the coins or keep them from slabbing.

I've used MS70 on slider and BU walking liberty halves and they slabbed w/o problems. MS70 is not a metal removing 'dip' like EZ Zest. Still, caution should be used, as the appearance will be different (and not always better) after use. Try it on a cheaper coin first, or on one your 1950 washies that does have marks that would keep it out of a high grade holder regardless.

On a MS or PR silver or gold coin MS70 will not hurt the coin, but make sure ALL the MS70 is rinsed off.. That MS70 like to hang on to the coins. Rinse rinse and then rinse again let soak and try acetone to make sure ALL the MS70 is gone...

I have never uses MS70 on gold myself, but did on some proof silver coins came out ok

  • Do not use MS70 on copper. You'll end up with a purple coin that will not slab. Not any more that is.
  • MS70 is a detergent surfactant that will remove dirt and other verdigris from silver coins. It will also, in some cases remove stains. I do not know whether it will remove your water spots, but it will do nothing to keep the coin from certifying, if it would have certified in the first place. MS70 can be used as you would use a dip or you can applt it to the coin surface using a Q-Tip and rolling the Q-Tip across the coin surface. As has been stated, make sure the coin is completely rinsed of all residual MS70 and dried.

  • Let me emphasize the need to rinse all traces of MS 70. I use 5-10 minutes under running tap water (plasticized skinny wire basked in a plastic bin), then a thorough rinse in distilled water, then an acetone rinse.

ANY MS70 residue will turn your coin dark brown or ugly blue over subsequent years, even if holdered.

MS70, as pointed out above, is a harsh detergent, hence the difficulty getting rid of all traces.

While it won't remove healthy metal, it will instantly remove any toning (tarnish) and thereby reveal underlying flaws that said toning might have made less visible.

Play around with MS 70 on pocket change and old bullion silver coins to get a feel for it. Handle the coins with your fingers before, during and after treatment. Any "stickyness" after rinsing and drying means the rinse was inadequate. Rob

  • I always marvel at everyone's DO NOT USE MS70 ON COPPER warnings!

I have used it on proof copper with great success...the key being using it properly diluted. I use about 1 tablespoon MS70 in 4 ounces of water.

Then I dip proof lincolns in it for about 10 seconds (gloves or tongs, NO bare fingers!) followed by a thorough rinse under running tap water, then a distilled water final rinse. Dry with canned air.

They look marvelous! No purple develops at this dilution.

Will they stand the test of time? That remains to be seen! Ask me in a few years!
