Speaking about repunched letters.....***update***

Check this one out. According to Rulau's book on tokens 4th edition he describes it as:
a Remnant of "O" "D" repunched on top of an "O"
The description is for the headband where the letter DODD appear
Wesley Cox deduced that the error was made, and corrected by Hayden at Scovill Mfg. Co. in 1850-51 period. After this
token was struck. Cox deduces that the major letter style occurred at Scovill in 1852.
The rest of the story is shown below in a copy from Rulau's book.
I have found the copper error and now I found the brass token!
2 great finds

Stefanie

****Update******
I posted this on another site and one of the responses was:
"Rulau expanded on this piece in the December 2007 TAMS Journal.
The brass reeded edge piece has another variety with the reverse lettering doubled
(most prominent in DD & Co)."
Very interesting!!! I never thought to look at the reverse but maybe I have something here

It's an obverse reproduction of a 1788 Maris 51G New Jersey Copper, where the "S" in Nova Caesarea is repunched over what appears to be a "C".

Thanks, I was hoping that this was it
It looked like it but wasn't sure until I had it in hand.

Back in 1575 they were all over the place
And they continued in the 17th, 18th and 19th century also...

<< <i>Years and years ago, I found a silver three cent piece on a local bid board with the last A in AMERICA very obviously repunched over an upside down A. I researched it as best I could and could not find anything out about the variety, so I convinced myself the coin had to be counterfeit. Of course, I placed a bid anyway, but lost. I've never seen another example and still wonder if I had stumbled across a major rarity.

That would have really been cool to see!
I wonder if it was counterfeit or not
Someone else must have thought it was real because they out bid you

The legends were hubbed on those, so it couldn't be a letter over an upside-down letter, at least on a genuine coin.
