The fee Leon was referring to was being charged to him by Seth from Simple Auction the company that he uses, not from VCP.
As far as the errors in auctions we add about 8,000 new results a week to the site. Right now we get about 10 reports for errors a week which we fix on the fly. We are the only pricing service that shows you the source to verify the value, no other company does this so yes there is bound to be some errors. But considering the amount of auctions added our error rate is minimal less then a tenth of a percent. Do any of you know how any of the other price guides come up with there values? From what I have seen they are all way off the mark and you can not email them to get it fixed in real time. If you are a SILVER member and you are looking at a value for a card and one seems out of line you can still report it to us and we will verify that it is correct or not.
I have actively participated and answered every question that has been posted on this board for almost 2 years now. We have listened to you and tried to act on all requests that you have made for improvements. I know of no other company that has done what I do in an open forum. Yes there are some people that no matter what I do can never make them happy, but I still try to anyways.
We are not going anywhere and will only be getting better with more features and faster in time.
I'm angry because I have to email you with mistakes on your site too many times every month. I'm angry because your site is very slow at times. I'm angry because you are gouging the good members that got you to the successful point you're at now.
Now for why you think I am angry.
Bobby changed the date of the new fees so many times, that I couldn't remember when they were going into place. So I emailed Bobby a few days ago saying:
I'm not sure how to do it on the website, but please add 1 additional year for me a $99.99, my username on the site is nam812. I believe I just paid the monthly fee a few days ago, so the $99.99 would start on my next bill mid October, correct? Thanks
His reply was:
The new price structure is now in place we gave all members almost 3 months on the add a year deal. Right now when you log in there will be a wizard to prompt you to choose which member type you want to use going forward.
After that it was just a few back and forth emails where I told him that if he couldn't do the 1 year/$99 deal for me I would have to cancel in mid October when my month is up, but that even as a non member I would still get all the info I needed, and wouldn't he rather make $100 than $0?
i have just canceled my membership also i do not use the site enough to justify that kind of increase and the site is so slow...i do wish you luck bobby but i think this is going to hurt you also in the long run....
I emailed VCP about 5 days ago regarding this card, and asked them why it was not showing on their site. It is a 7 day auction that was won with a buy it now, so it should have been added to the site. It was won 7 days ago, and then reported to them by me about 5 days ago, and yet it is still not listed on their site.
How many auctions like this per day do you guys miss? How can you call your data accurate if you are not capturing all the auctions?
Those were all 7 day auctions won with buy it nows and there are more, but it's late and my fingers are tired. You really want a raise for missing all these auctions? Are you kidding us Bobby?
Thanks for relaying that story. Beyond the desperate money grab with the 80% price increase, the site is also alienating long time users.
I will chalk it up to naievity on Bobby's part, but doesn't he realize it is in his business's best interest to keep existing customers who are a known paying commodity. Drive away too many of your core and there won't be any business left, as new subscribers are hard to come by in a hobby which is becoming more and more niche.
The reason why everyone is talking about the 179.00 package is because that is the same that everyone was getting for 99.00 You can hide it and sugar coat it all you want but that is a fact. I don't know how many subscribers you have, but it seems highly possible that you will lose half of them over this, so that means you are going to have roughly the same income from membership subscriptions as you do now
Had you lowered it to say 69.99 for the silver and kept the gold at 99.99 you would not be losing many customers and infact would probaly attract more subscribers therefore generating more income from subscriptions. More subscribers equals more potentional link income therefore more money.
1) I was seeing ALOT of auctions being missed and not reflected on the site, including many of my own.. This was just for a couple sets I was tracking so I imagine there's a ton across the board.
2) I only track one sport, I just can't see paying 179.00 a year to track a couple sets in one sport, especially when there's is alot of data being missed..
It would be nice if VCP had the option to buy smaller fee memberships per sport. If this were a option I would return.
Edit to add: The site was SLoooooW... I'm hooked up via cable and many times found myself stting here waiting for pages to load..
I don't know alot about internet sites and how they do buisness but does it cost more money to have more people view the site? It seems the cost of making a "subscription" is 0 and it is the other stuff that costs money (like servers). You make alot of people mad when they are buying something that costs 0 to make (the ability to view someones site) and you make large increases in that cost with little added value.
Leia's point is well taken, keeping your core buisness while gaining new customers thru discounts and by offering more defined levels of service catering to the niche collector would have been more advisable.
You are doing the same thing as alot of my fellow food manufacturers are doing and that is offering less (reducing amount per package) while increasing costs. It will backfire as it has for alot of these manufacturers already. You should read the blogs and articles about these tactics.
You can put down the other services out there but they are much much cheaper than your service and alot of collectors and dealers still use SMR and Beckett pricing so they offer some value. The only way to replace those services is to offer so much value it is a no brainer to use your service. Right now it is hard to see the value at your pricing structures.

The complaints today about quality of service issues are the same complaints that have existed for years. They're largely ignored because they're viewed more as personal attacks rather than an area that could stand some improvement. That’s why many of the replies are hostile and all those “we’re doing this and that” messages never lead to any improvements to the same basic issues. The complaints and suggestions here are from people who use the service but would like to see improvements made. Increasing the price may look like a wise business decision on paper, but you're asking the same people who aren't too thrilled with the quality of service to make a wise consumer decision.
I like the emails letting me know when cards hit Ebay and that's all I really use it for. Is that worth $12.99 a month?? Probably not. I think there should be more pricing options for people who just want those email notices . I understand I can do that right through Ebay but it took a lot of time to input all of the cards I'm looking for. Most likely going to pull the plug and go back to searching like I used to.

eBay has this same functionality for free. VCP's voice has gotten deafeningly quiet in this thread since I posted all those auctions that they missed in just that 1 set. Multiply that by all the sets that they "supposedly" chart, and you may as well toss $9.99 in the trash every month. The 6 auctions I showed that they missed are all from the set I collect, and now it's accuracy is in question with all those auctions not added to their site. I will no longer pay for this shoddy service after October 15th.
The auctions that you posted are all BIN's which take longer to post to the site. They have been in the system ever since Griffins listed them for sale.I have not been quiet at all just been out all day at the beach with my kids.
So now we are a shoddy service? If that is the case why did you email me 3 times wanting to pay for a Yearly membership at the old rate? So now that I would not give you the old rate we are a bad service? That makes a lot of sense to me sounds more like a person with a grudge. Why should I treat you so special and if I gave you the deal then that would not be fair to everyone else paying the going rate.

" I appreciate the advise but this has all been expected. We made the annoucement of a rate increase in the beginning or July and gave the existing members a chance to add up to 5 years at the current price to their terms. We had a very minor drop off in membership right away and since then a number of them have returned. You are seeing just a few members voicing their opinions and one unfairly so that is it ridiculous( my note--gave him advice on server issues and not retaining current ending auctions... i wonder which one he thought was ridiculous). We have over 5,000 members and are not going anywhere so please do not worry about us closing shop in the near future."

This reply in of itself shows where the website lies from a customer service prospective, and how they value long time customers. Poor form.
Are your paying customers supposed to hold off on all their purchases while you catch up? So you're saying that if one of your customers wants to bid with confidence, they really cant because they dont know if the card they want to buy had a few buy it now auctions happen in the last 6 days and your site hasnt updated them yet. Interesting. And why do buy it now auctions have to take so long to be added? Does that server have a different hamster running on a different wheel?
I will answer this question from BobbyVCP first, yes.
<< <i>If that is the case why did you email me 3 times wanting to pay for a Yearly membership......... >>
I only asked once, the other 2 emails were responses to your responses. If we woud have had 2 more responses each would that mean that I asked you 5 times?
I'm sure that there are a lot of other members like me and PoppaJ that send you anywhere from 5 to 10 emails every month about INACCURACIES ON VCP's WEBSITE. If you lose 100 members from this POOR BUSINESS MOVE of yours, and only 10 of them were like me and PoppaJ, then that is 50 to 100 auctions PER MONTH that will stay inaccurate.
So Bobby thinks this is a small percentage of his membership.. He fails to forget that this board only makes up a small portion of collectors out there. While many might have renewed for 99.00, I find it hard to believe half of those 5000 will renew at 179.
It almost sounds like a cut and run plan.. Lets get as many people to pay for the next 5 years as possible then we disappear in less than one. I don't know of any business that tries to sell subscriptions that far in advance except for magazines. I am not sure who is the more foolish there someone who actually piad for the next 5 years or the business owner who tries to sucker people into paying that.
Agreed. Somewhat. I doubt it's some nefarious scheme on Bobby's part to abscond with all those 4- and 5-year renewal fees, but the 80 percent increase and subsequent damage control didn't inspire much confidence in VCP's long-term sustainability. I did buy an additional year, but just wasn't willing to go beyond that and certainly won't renew at $179 annually.
The service sounds great, but the price is horrible, and missing auctions are an unforgivable thing. Apparently, VCP pays for some sort of privilege to have more streamlined access to Ebay searches than we do (or did I read that wrong?), so you'd think they'd be able to pick-up on auctions extremely quickly.
I am happy that a service like VCP exists, but it doesn't seem like they quite have it all work out yet, so to raise prices at this point (so dramatically), only opens up the door to a competitor who might be able to do it better.
Hey, the sportswanted guy is trying to do what E-Bay can't/won't--I'm sure a little extra competition to VCP can only be a good thing, too, right?
It seems very excessive for buy it now items to take a week to be entered into the VCP grid, when anyone can see those results in a few seconds by doing a simple completed auction search on eBay.
They raised rates, some of you won't renew and Nam812 likes to complain about VCP missing and/or screwing up a couple auctions (out of the many thousands they add each week).
Why would a competitor want to come in? With a subscription base of ~5000 there really isn't enough of a market to justify it. Card collecting is at most a niche market and VCP probably is trying to figure out how to expand into other areas.
I doubt many of you are IT consultants but the amount of effort to build the functionality, store the data and keep the system updated is pretty extensive. Performance could be better but I just open multiple tabs on my browser and do something else while VCP is churning away.
I check VCP before setting my snipe for any auctions where past price information is tracked by VCP. The image feature is useful to see how centering factors into pricing as well. I plan to renew. I haven't seen anyone point out another avenue for obtaining the information VCP offers. I collect PSA 9 HOF RCs across all sports many of the cards I need/buy rarely pop up for auction so having past pricing is very helpful.
I do hope that BobbyVCP has learned to stay positive and not get drawn into these sorts of discussion forum debates. It was very poor form to call out Nam812 and simply escalated the situation. That said you can't keep every customer happy and knowing when to cut them off is important.
<< <i>........Nam812 likes to complain about VCP missing and/or screwing up a couple auctions........ >>
I did not scour VCP looking for these errors, the 6 cards that I pointed out above that they have yet to add to their grid are just from the set that I collect. You call it complaining, I call it expecting a service that I am paying good money for.
