I heard something that could possibly have been rather disturbing, last night at my mother-in-law's

No, the disturbing statement was not that she thought I was a swell guy. image Anyway, my inlaws are in the process of moving out of their house, and into a more reasonably priced condo. As a result, they need to jettison a bunch of useless junk that they've accumulated over the past 40 or so years. I went to their house last night to help them get set up for an estate sale (heaven forbid that my mother in law hold the sale; rather, she outsourced it to some professional tag sale organizer). I was tasked with being the muscular beefcake image who moved the furniture and get it into position for the sale. The tag sale coordinator felt the need to bark out orders to me like a drill sargeant, but Longacre, being the kind and gentle soul that he is, simply smiled and broke his back moving furniture.

Anway, I carried down this old magician's trunk from the attic, and the tag sale lady asked if it was empty. I said, no, and that it was loaded wtih cash. Now when my mother in law heard that, she nearly knocked me down trying to rip the trunk from my hands. I said I was only kidding, of course. Then the tag sale lady said not to laugh, because at another recent sale, there was a similar trunk, and when they opened it, it was loaded with "old silver dollars".

Now Longacre's ears perked up. I asked what kind of silver dollars they were, etc. The lady didn't know, but she said "she wouldn't sell stuff like that a tag sale". I asked what happened to them (looking to make a rip image ). She said she took it to a local coin dealer and he gave her $1,100 the entire hoard. Now I have no idea what dates these coins were, how many there were, etc., etc. But this seems like the perfect setup for someone who has no clue about coins, walking into a local dealer and saying they were part of a tag sale, and then possibly getting pennies on the dollar for the coins.

I don't know the dealer in question, but I hope he was on the up and up. But who knows.

PS. I noticed my mother in law had three French military medals (one had the ribbon still attached), ready for sale. There were no prices yet, but I want to try to find out if they are worth millions or not. Mrs. L just went there to take pictures, so I hope to have something to post later.

Oh yeah... I have an acquaintance that started a business of selling off attic and cellar stuff... quite a business. I did manage a few acquisitions.. no, nothing of great value.. just of interest to myself. Good people to know... and if you ingratiate yourself as an expert, you get first dibs. Cheers, RickO

If the sale is timed correctly, you could push the mother-in-law into the empty trunk, tag it, and sell it within minutes, thus taking care of the matter in proper Connecticut tradition.

I suspect that the line forms to the right to 'get to know' this person.image

Two problems will be solved. First have a java with your mother inlaw alone late one evening and talk about bingo or knot stitching. Then ask her can you look in the trunk. Put all of the coins on the bed and tell her there is what looks like a gold coin in the bottom on the truck but you can seem to get it because you don't have any nails. WHen your mother inlaw reaches down push her azz in the truck, lock it up, repack all of the coins and take a one way plane ride to Korea.image

I've given my card to a couple of those estate / whole house tag sale folks, but never been called. The one I was able to speak to at length had a relationship with a local dealer, she just trucked into him whatever coins she found and relied on him to give her a fair deal.
