What is a collector to do in view of the economy?

BearBear Posts: 18,953 ✭✭✭
First of all take a deep breath and exhale slowly.

If your collection is quality for the grade, and you

have pruned it carefully over the past few years,

then you are OK. Sure prices may fall in the coming

year or two, but quality coins will always be in short

supply. Quality coins will always come back and even

exceed their prior high point. Thus, relax, in the

event of a serious down turn in the coin market, put your

collection in a nice safe place and bid your time. Tighten up

your standards when you buy a coin. Serious price drops are

really good times to buy better quality coins for less money. The

sun will rise tomorrow and even the birds will chirp at sunrise.

We have had cycles in the coin market in the past and will have many

more in the future. There is not much you can do about it, so just

be careful about what you buy and what you pay, from here on out.

    -----

If you are a collector, just use the times to buy
    coins on the cheap.

If you are a dealer, or a flipper, it may be more
    of a problem.

If there is a professional financial advisor relationship, that person should be consulted. Otherwise, it depends a lot on the personal financial circumstances of the collector. If the means are there, it might be a time to be opportunistic. If there is financial difficulty, selling coins that bring the most money might be in order. Often, these are the collector's most prized possessions, but it is important to remember that no objects are irreplaceable.

First off are you collecting to keep long term OR to sell at some future point? If you plan to sell now might be a good time. How do you feel about your financial well being now or for the future? Is your job/career safe or are you vulnerable to layoff or downsizing? Is there more upside in the market in your opinion? Some think we are in a cool down on coins, but of course that is not a straight across the board sorta thing. If you feel good about your future buy, if you don't feel good about it don't buy.

Don't go into panic mode, if necessary go into a holding pattern, if possible buy while prices are low.

I have a feeling "all this" with the economy may be a lot closer to getting back to nomal than most people think.

Having a good look into short selling (and WHO is doing it) may rally the equity market in a Huge way.

I do worry though, that the coin market may see a lot of quick selling from some who are ready to get back in at a market bottom and need funds fast.

If you see a lot LOT of investment quality coins hit the auctions soon, that is whats happening.
  • Good thread, Mr. Bear. I have pruned my collection lately and feel comfortable with the quality now. I think coins still have a long way to go.

I hope coin prices drop like a rock.

There are some key dates I'll be needing soon.

I'm still collecting and will continue to do so.

Dealers who plan and stay abreast of the market, wont necessarily have it bad, as they can adjust buying prices along the way. Stay in good cash position and avoid lots of unsaleable inventory.

This must be the paranoia center of the universe. If it is not worrying about a coin magazine being delivered to a home, or how big an SDB to have, then it is the market or PM's..... how frikken ridiculous.. get on with your life... this is not the end of the world. I am beginning to believe this is a whiners forum.... Cheers, RickO

The short bus didn't get any longer and my widgets didn't get any shinier. No loss , no gain. No stress, no pain. That's what this collector thinks.

Just did and L's reports are getting better with each show... nothing shocking as the market has been in an expected correction phase since mid 2006.

If you've been playing in the market since don't get your panties in a bunch just yet! imageimage

This sticker should be on the front cover of Redbook as the coin market always cycles. If we are finally bound for a correction the common date widgets will be hit hard. It's like playing poker and if your hand is full of MS67 1881-S Dipped Morgan's... you shouldn't go all in. image

You can blame the economy on the speculators; if you know any of them slap them upside their head and tell them to quit screwing around.
