Looking to start a new collection

I've finished a Kennedy set and 20th century dollar type set. I'm currently working on a 7070 and Franklins (BUs). I want to start another collection but I want something different. I know there is a member somewhere around here that collects coins with holes in them, someone else choose a particular coin and got all the grades from poor to MS. Can you folks throw out some other ideas? I probably wouldn't spend more than $400 for the most expensive coin.

  • Well, first off, you should collect what you like.

For less than $400 for the most expensive coin, you might consider a Washington Quarter set, or a Morgan Dollar Date Set. I completed the morgan dollar set for about $1,000 total, and I think it was 32 coins. A Peace Dollar set might be accomplished, but I think the 1928 would be right around $400 +/-

Opus, Your gonna have to find a new series on your own as you can't do it based on suggestions.

Take your time looking around as there's over 200+ years worth of US coinage designs to choose from.

Do some homework, be patient as something with bite you! image

........all you have to do is look at all coins and decide which ones you like well enough to start collecting.

only you would know what grade, or price range you want to stay with. and the most important thing is to.......................HAVE FUN!!image

You could do a set of Presidential dollars for face value. image
  • Here are some ideas:

    1) Type set of error coins
    2) Type set of toned coins
    3) Type set of first year coins
    4) Type set of circulated coins in XF or so
    5) Year set of coins - One coin from each year
    6) Birth Year sets - could be yourself, loved ones, etc.
    7) Modern Commemorative Set (gold, dollar, or half dollar)
    8) Circulated Lincoln Set - You can get the moderns from circ or bank roll searching, and most circ versions can be had under your limit of the early wheats)
    9) Get a red book and see what else gets you excited!

    Look at peace dollars.
I don't like them, but should be doable.
Look at 3c silver pieces. If you stay AU, you should be fine for most of them I believe.

A lot depends on the grade you want to do with coins and any key dates.

Also look at Jefferson nickels or Roosevelt dimes (silver/clad). All could be done MS for way below $400/coin

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

You might want to try something in PL. They'd make a stunning
set and be really different. Some of the moderns would be inexpensive.

Zinc Lincolns could be done quite cheaply.

Even though you said $400 max per coin you might look at some shorter serries and go higher per coin.

If you did that you could do a set of MP lincolns or a set of FE cents.

Or if you want a cheaper easier set try silver roosies.

Go for proof Bust dollars by both die state and die marriage. Challenging, and will look great when you have finished.
