I went nuts on a coin!

BarberianBarberian Posts: 4,643 ✭✭✭✭✭
When I think about how much I "overpaid" for this coin, I get bummed.

But when I look at it, I can't believe I own such a beautiful two-tone, circ cameo 1851 SLH!

If you think you overpaid, imagine how the underbidder feels. He/she are probably kicking themself.

Nice ! Great score, too. It's better to step up to the plate than to cheer from the stands.

Don't look at it as over paying....look at it as paying strong money for a great looking coin. I own a seated dollar with a similar look and I paid considerably more than guide but......guides usually reflect average prices for average coins......they do not provide prices for coins with super original eye appealing surfaces so.....did you really overpay? image

I like it also, and I bet I wasted more money on something I don't have anymore than what you paid for this coin.

On most of my nicer coins, I think I overpaid when I bought them.

I know nothing of its scarcity, but it appears to be a choice, mid-grade example of it.

Very scarce date-nice coin. I would say that you did not overpay for it, as 1851 is a very tough date. Even if you did overpay, at least you have it. A lot of times these days if you don't overpay for great coins - you don't get them.

I'd say that current retail value for a 1851 in VF35 is about $1500. I paid about $350 more than that. Looking back through the HA archives to see just how much I overspent, the only other price close to what I paid for this coin was $200 less 4 years ago. Turned out it was the SAME COIN. That was somewhat comforting. Someone else thought it was special too (besides the underbidder and myself).

A very appealing example for the grade.

I think "nuts" is an exaggeration.
Where can you find a coin like that for grey sheet bid? It just will never happen.
At the last long beach show I found the 1852 half-$ that I have been looking for for many years and I think I paid almost double grey sheet.
I guess you would call me insane but we will not know until I try to sell it some time in the future.

I'm the same way with Bust quarters and halves...if I see a circ cam, I gotta have it no matter what

Quote OP, "Turned out it was the SAME COIN" !imageimage

Did you look at the pop report? They have only slabbed TWO coins in that grade. So you now have 50% of all the slabbed VF35 1851s the world. image

It's hard to say you paid too much .

I agree, but I'm wondering if the white balance was not better on the reverse photo/scan?

I rarely say this about a female on a coin such as this one but this is a very handsome coin.

    I like it very much.

    Overpay?

Whats an extra couple of hundred bucks or so? Just skip the movies with your wife or friend just 10 times in the next three years and you are just fine.

    Great looking coin.

If you intend on not selling it for awhile,
then I doubt you overpaid for it.

Most of my coins were bought for
more than the "current" amount but
have since appreciated nicely over the years.
