not new to the collection but newly imaged by MG

I know it's not the most spectacular ever... but... your thoughts on this coin?

    My thoughts?
Nice strike, fine color, but too many little carbon spots for me.

Here's how bad I am at grading these right now.....I would have thought, from just the pictures alone, that it was high-end XF to low-end AU.
Never would have thought it graded what it did.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

yes... I am a bit perplexed on this coin...

This was from my grandpa's collection... i sent it in just cuz and I was a bit surprised myself... but... there is a fair amount of luster in the coin... maybe it was a toss up from AU - MS?

are you kidding? of course not... it is just a coin image. I sent it in just cuzzzz... I hate having keys/semi keys raw... and if i do I tend to either want to certify or sell... just gives me a bit of piece of mind.

The grade puzzles me as well.
But I like it. I like it a lot. Warts and all. image

Another AU coin in an MS62 holder.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • It looks au-55 to me.

But then again, the person who graded it, is a professional who gets paid alot of money to grade coins everyday. I'm sure he knows something that I do not.image

The '31-S Lincoln, like the '50-D Jeff, is the "anti-1884-S Morgan" in terms of condition census. These are so common in MS that market grading AU coins into MS holders is rampant. Contrast that with something like the '84-S Morgan, where many common-date Morgans that would market grade 62 or 63 are put into 55 and 58 holders virtually every time and where even the slightest "cabinet friction" will get it into an AU slab.

I guess consistency is too much to ask for.

  • Nice color and strike - the reverse is hammered!

Looks to be market graded as a 62. Probably a AU58 Super Slider!

I love the history behind this coin. Such a low mintage, and during a very difficult time in the US.
All coins kept in bank vaults.

Somehow it is beautiful and ugly at the same time.

I would have pegged it as AU58 but it has tones of luster so maybe PCGS is chalking the wear up to stacking friction on the high points.
  • kinda a funky looking piece.
  • I'm with Bochiman on this one. It's an average piece and certainly not MS.

But I wouldn't kick it out of bed even if it was eating crackers! Nice coin.
