I had to chuckle when I read this response from an ebay seller...

I inquired about a raw 1871-CC Seated Half on ebay and simply asked if they would give a guarantee that PCGS would slab it for me? I said that I didn't care what grade it got, as long as it got into a holder.

Here's the response I got:

"only a complete idiot would guarantee ANY coin would slab with PCGS i would guarantee this will slab ANACS but make absolutely no promises of what they would grade it."

Not sure what to think about this one but I do know that I will be moving on to the next coin that catches my eye.

Actually, while his delivery wasn't exactly customer friendly, his response was dead on accurate. I wouldn't even go so far as to guarantee that a coin currently in PCGS plastic would make it back in if it were cracked out, much less any raw coin.

I agree. I would have been more tactful, perhaps, but I happen to be in agreement with the seller. I would never make that guarantee. I do not presume to speak for PCGS, and refuse to guess what they would say about a coin, except in hypothetical "guess the grade" threads here. Asking somebody to guarantee someone else's opinion is pretty farfetched. I know there are dealers who can afford to do it, and more power to 'em, but I have a hard enough time as it is, without trying to predict the future outcome of somebody's slab submission.

He didn't beat around the bush or avoid the question. I don't blame him for not giving a guarantee on a raw coin to holder at PCGS. If he has a return policy you could look at the coin and decide for yourself. Agreed it's not the best way to respond though.

Yes, the seller was certainly honest. The coin definitely looked "good" to me at least from the image and I would be surprised if it did not slab. I was just really surprised by the point blank response, but I guess true honesty is always the best policy.

I think that the next time a prospective bidder asks me that question, my response will be: Let me give you the number for the grading room. You can call them and ask them directly if they will guarantee my coin will grade.

Not very tactful, but the correct information. Far less trouble to buy a coin already slabbed in your preferred brand of plastic.

You want a bargain coin and a pcgs guarentee from a picture. You read here all the time that dealers have gotten burned lately at shows trying to get new purchases put in the pgsc label. To think a ebay seller would offer better than the pros is to much. Buy the coin, decide for yourself or return it for refund.

Especially right now with their grading standards.

I know a guy who sends his coins to ANACS. He says they're cheaper. I don't think he touches a problem coin when buying them. He's just not willing to pay a higher price for encapsulation.
When I asked him why, he said : "The coins are collectible to me, not marketable for you"

It was hard to argue with him. (debating is the proper term, not arguing)

The seller was a little coarse in his presentation, but what he said was absolutely right.
No one can guarantee that PCGS will slab a coin.
Read some of the threads here about body bagged coins.

Where I come from,calling someone an idiot (he is calling you an idiot indirectly,dizzyfoxx) for asking a simple question is downright rude.

Computer rage,it's a phenomenon of the times.

What's his ebay handle so I can be sure to avoid him?

Yep, it never ceases to amaze me the number of people who think it's perfectly ok to act like an ass sitting in front of their computer or sitting in their car, but those same people won't dare say a word to someone's face. LOL

Aside from making the response a little more polite, I don't see anything wrong with it.

The last big coin I bought was raw. The deal was it had to get into a PCGS holder, and I did not care about the grade. If the coin did not get into the PCGS holder, the deal was off, and I would get a refund.

Here's the coin. It graded PCGS AU-58. I've burned on early copper enough times with respect to body bags to buy it IN the plastic if I want it in the plastic or with a refund if the coin does not grade.

i am curious mr1874, how do you come to the conclusion that the seller is "indirectly" calling dizzy an idiot, the seller states "only an idiot" would make that guarantee, if dizzy was asking the seller to make the guarantee, then the seller would be the idiot if in fact he made the guarantee, the seller did not state that only an idiot would ASK for a guarantee, im not an english major but from what i read, the seller was just being brutally honest, and not calling anyone anything. care to explain your comment ?

I certainly didn't feel as though the "idiot" comment was directed towards me or meant to offend me. I was surprised by the response but I certainly did not take it personally. After really giving it some serious thought and putting the shoe on the other foot, I can completely understand the premise of this. In fact, just to show how put back I was by all this, I ended up buying the coin.

Dizzy, the coin doesn't need plastic wrapped around it. A rare date like that will sell itself to an educated collector, if and when the time comes. Or as it just did.

I think I buy a lot of Seated Coins and sell a few. Last month I posted a 1859 Dime , in a PCGS holder and most people called it cleaned. Based on that I would not promise it would get into a holder. I did and upgraded too. My point is I think short of a 2008 proof set in the original holder I would never say I coin would or would not holder.

I would always represent the coin would get into an ANACS holder as real, what other comments they might make however are unknown to even the most advanced collectors.

I'm not sure if it's my Southern upbringing or not, but I try not to type anything to anyone on this new fangled medium that I wouldn't say to them face to face.

Although when attacked I will defend myself. . . In person or on a 'puter.
