i cry fake!
I personally think I would be reluctant to bid on these auctions.
I'm sure everything is on the up and up. I'm sure the seller is top shelf... But the little voices in my head whisper otherwise.
<< <i>I just spent a some time looking at the seller's auctions. Seller has a bunch of coins for sale - almost all have multiple bids even with 4 days to close. I see several auctions where the same buyer is bidding on multiple auctions. Next I started looking at the bidding history and feedback for some of the bidders. Then I developed a rather unpleasant theory.

The seller happens to be Russ!!
<< <i>The seller happens to be Russ!! >>
So?
Russ does not control who bids on auctions for items that are consigned with Russ.
Although I like Compucheap...
I dislike 'cliques' and 'inner circles' where members are considered capable of doing no wrong.
I'd rather treat all auctions, wares, and people with equal respect and caution.

You'll see a lot of the same people bidding on multiple items from Russ. Some are low bid cheapasses
Some are those that don't want to dork with unknown sellers and stay somewhat centered around a few sellers.
While I agree with your premise and caution, I would, and have, bid on Russ' auctions with a concern. Though....I am one of those cheapasses most of the time so I haven't won anything from him for a long time....heck, most of my snipes don't even get trigged

I suggest psychiatric counseling. You can't beat compucheap for honesty and customer service.
That would be telling.
The inner circle will be preserved.

i can state something that i know goes on with forum members.
many of us here will see a coin being sold by a forum member and
put in a super lowball bid just to get things going. we think we have
no chance in heck of ever winning but if we did it would be an easy
score!
if i saw a russ auction i would not hesitate to throw in a low ball bid
knowing if i won, i would pay, i would get the coin, and russ (consingor) would
have lost money :-)
not really shilling. just a sort of, ohh i know who that is, let me throw
a bid in to get things going.. i don't think i would ever win it because
i know the market pays more for that piece.
-------
for example, some forum members will recognize my sales on ebay
when they are half eagles. their bids are less then melt! obviously
they would pay if won but they darn well know it aint going for their
price.

When I have seated dimes up for sale I see the same guy putting in extremely lowball bids on these. He shows up once every two months and lowball bids on my seated dimes. His max bid being like $1.50.
Please, let me win this coin. It is the last mint mark I need to have a complete set of 19th century mint marks.
Look at the auctions and poke around at the feedback for the seller and bidders. Like I said, I was not certain that there was something fishy going on, but there were certainly something "interesting" going on. Mix of some pretty funky coins, coupled with lots of bids, but honest descriptions and good photos, what conclusions would you draw if you didn't know the seller? My conclusion was "BEWARE."
I feel assured from the comments that what I saw was not shill bidding, but either existing customers or friends honestly bidding or perhaps forum members "helping out" a friend. That sounds great. Given that I would have no problem bidding on the auction.
Regarding the advice for psychiatric counseling, I take in in the same humorous vane "little voices" was offered.
Cheers all,
Bob
I guess you can say I only bid on stuff from e-bay from people I know or have done bussiness with before and trust them that they will deliver what they say!
There's a fair chance I'll never win one though because TBONE's a cheapass.

<< <i>What I saw was a bunch of bids on auctions that I wouldn't normally expect to see bids on. I also saw a number of the same accounts "tossing in bids." It looked to me like shill bidding - or at the least something fishy. I mean no offense to the seller - who I do NOT know. You all can look at the auctions for yourself. >>
Anybody who does significant volume on eBay attracts regular lowballers who put in dinky bids hoping for a score. That's the nature of the venue.
