SOLD on September 15, 2008: LordMarcovan Seated Liberty Type Set for $4646.00

THE SCANS ARE NOW SHOWN IN A GROUP AND ALSO INDIVIDUALLY. KEEP IN MIND THAT THE TWO RAW COINS ARE NOT FOR SALE. THEY WERE ACCIDENTALLY SCANNED. REMEMBER, THESE ARE SCANS AND NOT DIGITAL CAMERA PHOTOGRAPHS SO KEEP THAT IN MIND. SCANS USUALLY MAKE THE COINS LOOK WORSE!!!

THE GRADING COMMENTARY FROM COIN RARITIES ON-LINE NOW POSTED. Dave Wnuck of CoinRarities Online is well known for being reasonably tough on his grading standards.

INITIAL MINIMUM ASKING PRICE I AM ASKING FOR ARE NOW POSTED.

For sale Lordmarcovan's Seated Liberty Type Set:

Here are the rules.

All offers must be placed out in the open and must be placed ALL IN ONE POSTING by each poster. As you know, each poster can edit his post an unlimited amount of times. Merely send me a pm that you edited your posting/offer in case I miss it. Your offers are NOT proxy bids. Your offer is what you are offering. Just make sure it is higher than the previous offer. ALL OFFERS MUST BE TO THE NEAREST DOLLAR. You may retract your offer(s) until the last day but on the last day, you cannot retract your offer.

This is NOT an auction. In an auction, once you bid on a coin, you cannot retract such bid more than once. There are no proxy bids. There are
no increments between offers like there is in a auction. Nothing is secretive as in an auction. No pm bids, no telephone bids, no mail bids, no email bids, no fax bids. Everything will be sold. No reserves above the initlal asking price. Nothing at all. You must use your one allotted post to place your offer or to amend your offer.

Anyone placing a second POST to place a new offer will be disregarded and may at my discretion, void the original offer.

Naturally, any poster may ask a fellow poster to place an offer on their behalf. I can see no reason why this would be a problem with anyone else. If any poster wishes not to ask another poster to place an offer on their behalf I am sure we can supply a well recognized poster who would make an offer on behalf of another poster as long as such poster indicates that they are offering on behalf of poster A, poster B and so forth. Poster A and poster B must then send me a pm confirming that they indeed have asked the well recognized (or unknown) poster to make an offer on their behalf. This way everyone knows what offers are being made and for how much. While it is true that there might be offers against your "favorite" competitor, or even you, etc., at least you will know that all offers are legitimate and not contrived or self-created. You can even have your friend post for you as long as your friend is a PCGS poster in good standing AND MUST HAVE BEEN A PCGS POSTER FOR MORE THAN 45 DAYS!!!!!! THIS HELPS TO ELIMINATES ANY SHILL ACTIVITY!!

The final time to post a final offer is Sunday night September 14, 2008 at 11:59 and 59 seconds PM EDT.

I will sell each item individually (will be shown in a few days in the opening post) and list the highest price offered in the opening post with the understanding that anyone may offer to buy the entire set for greater than the sum of the final price of the individual coins PLUS 11% ADD-ON. I will give the whole set prospective purchaser an extra day until Monday night September 15, 2008 at 11:59 AND 59 seconds PM EDT to make an offer on the entire set.

I will allow installment payments of up to 60 days to be made on individual coins. There will be a $2 fee added to each installment payment. In such case I request that all three checks be mailed to me in advance with the appropriate dating of each check. The first 1/3 check is current date, the second check dated 30 days later and the last 1/3 check dated 60 days from the current date. No paypal on installment payments. Also, once installment payment plan is elected, the buyer waives the right to a return policy.

To make it more fair for individuals placing offers on each lot, the prospective purchaser who wishes to buy the whole set must OFFER AT LEAST 11% MORE THAN THE SUM OF ALL INDIVIDUAL LOTS.

The poster who purchases the most number of Lordmarcovan's slabs (regardless of dollar amount) will be awarded Lordmarcovan's original binder (just pays a minimal extra s&h). In case of a tie in most slabs purchased we will allow the two winners to decide who wants the binder more and if no agreement can be made then we will "draw straws."

Postage will not exceed $3.00 for each shipment. The insurance will be charged strictly at cost based on USPS rates as follows:
Amount for Merchandise
Insurance Coverage Desired

Fee1

$0.01 to $50
$1.70

$50.01 to 100
2.15

$100.01 to 200
#2.60

$200.01 to 300
$4.60

$300.01 to 400
$5.55

$400.01 to 500
$6.50

$500.01 to 600

$7.45

600.01 to 5,000
(maximum liability is $5000)

$7.45 plus $0.95 per $100 or fraction thereof over $600 in declared value
I will determine the postage and insurance by testing the packages at the post office in the next few days. I assure you that there will be no attempt to make any profit on the S&H&I and will determine a set price per slab and am inclined to send them by priority mail in the small box to better protect the slabs as they are of the vintage kind.

Since the PCGS time clock is pretty accurate there should be no argument about last second offers.

If a late offer is received, ONLY the poster who properly won the coin can decide whether to allow a "late offer" to win the coin. Such person must state his decision in a public posting so that all can see.

The reason for only allowing ONLY ONE OFFER postings for the MONTH for individual offer(s) per poster is to not violate PCGS rules regarding excessive postings to keep this thread on top.

If you have any questions regarding rules and regulations of this bidding you are welcomed to pm me. I can respond to you as well as edit my original posting as needed for clarification/corrections to the rules.

Payments will be accepted through paypal but my paypal accounts do not accept credit cards at this time. If enough people request to make credit card payments through paypal, I will be forced to upgrade my paypal account to accept credit cards. As far as surcharges on credit card paypal payments I seek your opinions by pm.

ALL GRADING COMMENTARY BY DAVE WNUCK OF COIN RARITIES ON-LINE. HE HAS NO FINANCIAL INTEREST ON THIS TRANSACTION AND IS PRECLUDED FROM BIDDING ON ANY OF THESE COIN.

INITIAL OPENING PRICE TOTAL $2272.00 (Links to scans are shown below):
TOTAL SUM OF ALL CURRENT BIDS = $4646.00
AMOUNT NEEDED TO WIN ENTIRE COLLECTION $4646.00 X 1.11 = $5157.06

(This favors and protects the individual bidders and gives them a fighting chance to win their lots.)

GRAND TOTAL OPENING FUNDS REQUESTED FOR THE ENTIRE SET $2272.00 (this number will not be updated until several days before the end of the auction) not including S&H.

THE HISTORY OF THE OREVILLE-LORDMARCOVAN SEATED LIBERTY TYPE SET by Lordmarcovan:

In 1999, I transitioned from a raw Dansco-7070 type set to a certified 19th and 20th century nongold type set. I completed that in September of 2001 (just prior to the dark days of 9/11). I had decided to switch to a PCGS Registry type set in the summer of 2001, and that brief flirtation with the Registry is what initially brought me to these forums. During my changeover to all-PCGS coins, I listed the bulk of the type set on eBay. I decided to sell the entire Seated Liberty portion of the collection (including the 20c piece and Trade dollar) as one large lot.

I was on a smaller budget in those days (working as a hotel bellman for six bucks an hour plus tips), so these coins are not condition-census trophy pieces. I was (and am) rather proud of them, though, because I bought the best I could afford at the time.

The September 11th terrorist attacks happened right in the midpoint of my eBay auction when I was selling them. Oreville decided to step in and bid on the set, and "save" me from taking a bad hit on it. He won it and purchased it from me, and has held it since, refusing at least one casual buyback offer from me a few years ago. Now they are for sale again. Since I no longer have any ownership stake in these coins, I hope you'll not consider this post to be spam, though of course I like to give a friend a boost, since he did the same for me seven years ago. He has asked that people only post ONCE on his BST auction thread.

He had posted some overlarge group scans of the coins, so I have taken the liberty of copying and pasting them into individual coin images. These scans were adequate but not terrific. It is nice to see some of my old "babies" again. Some of these types like the dollars were the first examples I had ever owned. Sadly, I have forgotten much of the provenance on these after seven years, but when it is not otherwise noted, most came from eBay or Heritage, or maybe in one or two cases, Teletrade.

It was a fun collection to build, and seeing these coins again makes me all nostalgic.

The raw 1857-O dime is just something added later and was not a part of the original set (I believe he intends it to be a giveaway or a bonus coin during the sale, but I don't know.

Oreville's Comment: Indeed that raw AG-3 1857-O dime will be given away but have not figured out how yet!!!

THE HISTORY OF THE LORDMARCOVAN-OREVILLE SEATED LIBERTY TYPE SET by Oreville:
Lordmarcovan got stuck selling his wonderful slabbed set (not PCGS) of 19th century circulated Liberty Seated coinage on ebay right smack in the middle of 9/11/01. I noticed that his lot of coins had not been getting bid on and contacted him and asked him if I could help him out. He knew I had personally seen his set which was beautifully assembled in a HUGE brown binder at his home in Georgia. It was a nice set assembled in an array of ANACS, NGC and SEGS third party grading service slab. The highest bidder at the time had put in a very weak offer but no else even put in a bid against him so his set was virtually selling for almost LESS than face value. Incredible!!!!

I was fortunate to have purchased it at a VERY reasonable price since no one else wanted to even look at coins of any kind on ebay at the time, I am going to give my good friend, Lordmarcovan 33 1/3% of the profit I make on this set while he is out looking for a new job. Of course, I do not recall what I even paid for the set!!! LOL.

I am also doing this since I feel badly that about 4 years ago, Lord expressed some interest in buying his set back at a profit for me. I relied negatively since I was not ready to do at the time.

Since I had decided to sell this set prior to Lord getting the news, I think it is only fair to give back to Lordmarcovan just a little piece back of what he has given to this hobby and to me. This is NOT about compassion or a gift. This is simply about my earning a future "When I get time off, I want to go beachcombing for coins with Lord!!" LOL. Perhaps he could teach an ANA course on "searching" for coins!

In the event that Lordmarcovan lands on his feet real quick, Lordmarcovan has already indicated that he intends to "pay the funds forward" to those on our board in temporary need of financial assistance. Perhaps this could be the start of our own "giving fund."

We board members are always there to help others while we always seem to put ourselves last. This time, we will take care of our own. It is our time.

REMEMBER, THESE ARE SCANS AND NOT DIGITAL CAMERA PHOTOGRAPHS SO KEEP THAT IN MIND. SCANS USUALLY MAKE THE COINS LOOK WORSE!!!

I have edited out all extraneous commentary and ask everyone else to do the same, since oreville wants each bidder to POST ONCE ONLY.

This way his thread doesn't get bumped unfairly to the top more often than it should.

I took the liberty of posting a discussion thread about these coins on the US Coin Forum, where hopefully it will not be considered spam. It is for discussion ONLY and not for bidding or anything to do with the sale, which should be posted here.

<< <i>Dansco 7070 type set collectors take heed- these coins should be nice lower- to medium-priced examples that should be right up your alley!

Since you used the terms "bidders" and "bids", how is this not an auction?
Is there a scenario where a coin could be awarded at less than the highest bid?

    AU58:

Since you do not have your pm opened up I cannot respond to you except in the open which uses up my only post of the day.

<< <i> Since you used the terms "bidders" and "bids", how is this not an auction? >>

You may want to double check.

<< <i>Is there a scenario where a coin could be awarded at less than the highest bid? >>

Indeed, alll 23 coins could sell for less than the numerous offers potentially received for the entire set of coins and if the various individual coins sell for more than 89% of the offers made for the entire set, then all of 23 coins win despite not having the highest offer,

So in summary, there are 23 instances in which all 23 coins can be awarded for less than the highest offer ( your term - bid).

In addition, if a late offer is received that is higher than the previous offer, only the person who made the previous timely offer can decide to keep or allow the poster with the highest offer to have the coin.

Furthermore, a poster with only 20 days on the PCGS boards CANNOT win any coin despite having made the highest offer on ALL of the coins!

I could go on but I sincerely hope this mostly answers your questions.

    =======================

    ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS & ANSWERS:

<< <i>Second, I have no particular qualms with this auction, but honestly, I'm not sure what to bid. You may set a minimum bid, >>

YES, I AM GOING TO SET MINIMUM PRICES BASED STRICTLY ON MY COST IN THE YEAR 2001 ALLOCATED AS BEST AS POSSIBLE ON EACH LOT AND THE REASON FOR DOING SO IS TO PREVENT ANYONE FROM BUYING THE ENTIRE SET AND TAKING ADVANTAGE OF "NO OFFERS ON SOME OF THE LOTS." IN THIS WAY IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOME LOTS WILL GO UNSOLD.

<< <i>but the rules themselves are not really clear. How many chances do I get to bid on a particular coin? >>

YOU CAN OFFER AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WISH. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS EDIT/AMEND YOUR ONE ALLOWABLE POST. THERE ARE NO LIMITS ON DOING SO. OF COURSE, I MIGHT NOT UPDATE THE HIGHEST PRICES BECAUSE I MIGHT BE AT WORK, OR PLAYING, OR JUST SLEEPING. BUT BY PUBLICLY POSTING NEW HIGHER OFFERS (DAY OR NIGHT) OTHERS WILL HAVE TO SEE YOUR HIGHEST OFFER AT SOME POINT SINCE I WILL LIST WHO MADE THE OFFER NEXT TO THE OFFER AMOUNT.

    [Q}If I get outbid, can I bid again? >>

    OF COURSE.

<< <i>If I bid too high, is the rule "second best + increment" or is it what I put in as a bid. >>

I WOULD THINK IT WOULD BE WHAT YOU OFFER SO THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO RESPONSIBLY PLACE AN OFFER. IT IS NOT A PROXY BID. YOUR OFFER WOULD BE YOUR OFFER.

<< <i>Why do I have to wait to see if someone trumps me for a coin by buying the entire set? That is why I like the eBay or a similar auction system. It is honest, convenient, and the rules are easy to follow. >>

GOOD QUESTION; I STIPULATED THAT THE PROSPECTIVE PURCHASER FOR THE ENTIRE SET WOULD HAVE TO PAY AT LEAST A 11% PREMIUM OVER THE SUM OF ALL INDIVIDUAL PRICES OFFERED. DO KEEP IN MIND THAT BY DOING SO THE BUYER OF THE ENTIRE SET IS THEN BUYING SOME COINS THAT APPEAR TO BE "DOGS" WITHIN THE SET WHICH MAY NOT BE ADVISABLE.

<< <i>If I am the high "offeror" on a single coin, and no one offers 11% more than the sum total of all offers, will I win the coin for which I am high "offeror"? >>

    YES INDEED.

<< <i>If I'm the highest offeror and don't get the coin, I will be greatly upset >>

THIS WOULD ONLY HAPPEN IF A BUYER OFFERS 11% OR MORE FOR EACH AND EVERYONE OF THE 23 COINS THAN EVERYONE ELSE COMBINED.

  • (Edit) : Regarding the 45 day reqt. Who is going to shill bid on the auction except for the OP? The OP is the judge, the jury, and the executioner all in one. There is no particular reason for anyone else to shill bid ... The only problem I see is if someone bids and doesn't pay ...

(More Edit): This reminds me of the game Dungeons and Dragons, where the Dungeon Master rules all. In the end, everybody gets confused by the rules ...

    Questions/Comments:
If it sounds like an auction, and looks like an auction, then it ...
If I'm the highest offeror and don't get the coin, I will be greatly upset

        From the OP:

<< <i>If you have any questions regarding rules and regulations of this bidding you are welcomed to pm me. I can respond to you as well as edit my original posting as needed for clarification/corrections to the rules. >>

Even though the original post was edited 30 minutes after I asked the question, it still refers to bidding.
I do not have an issue with whether or not this is an auction, I am trying to decipher the difference between this concept and an auction.
There are a number of coins I may be interested in.
If I am the high "offeror" on a single coin, and no one offers 11% more than the sum total of all offers, will I win the coin for which I am high "offeror"?

I have edited out all extraneous commentary and ask everyone else to do the same, since oreville wants each bidder to POST ONCE ONLY.

This way his thread doesn't get bumped unfairly to the top more often than it should.

I took the liberty of posting a discussion thread about these coins on the US Coin Forum, where hopefully it will not be considered spam. It is for discussion ONLY and not for bidding or anything to do with the sale, which should be posted here.

      • From a logic position only and not a for/against position, the portion of the scenario re. "...in addition, if a late offer is received...." might benefit from a bit of clarity.

        Respectfully, John Curlis

Seriously, though, the ones that originally were mine are nice intermediate-price coins at best. I have never been a big-budget guy. But like I said, I bought the best I could find and afford at the time (which wasn't always much).

But if he is parting with any of his own coins in addition to my own, I suspect there will be some higher-caliber offerings? >>

This 1857-O dime will be given away as a bonus to anyone that makes an offer on anyone of the 23 coins. Dave Wnuck graded the coin AG-03. It is raw.

Only requirement is to post an acceptable offer that is at least $1 greater than the last offer left by someone else on at least one coin at least one time.

You are not required to win any coin.

The dime will be shipped postpaid.

        ttt ... just b'cause.

Yes, I know i'm bending the rules, but this is not a 'bidding' post.

I felt that three days of non-exposure was a little long. It is only right that these items get more 'eyes' on them.

I will not 'ttt' again; I promise! Let's hope that bidders will keep the thread near the top!
