Has this Saint been puttied/messed with?

I have a common MS64 Saint that has loads of this yellowish/blue coating on it. Is this haze, or has it been messed with and now showing up?

Here is how it looked in February:

Here is how it looks now (color adjusted to show what I am talking about):

I don't know, but I sure would like to see some good closeup pictures of puttied gold coins (or other compositions besides gold, if puttying is done on them.)

Edit-that green looks almost like PVC haze? It wouldn't have come from the PCGS holder, but it could have been a contaminated coin that was not properly conserved? Most services (even ANACS, during their net-grade days) would bodybag a PVC coin. I once got back a gorgeous white MS67 quality silver coin in a bodybag from ANACS (ANACS!), for invisible PVC that I never did see. No net grade- a bodybag!

I still don't think it looks all that bad, but if it "turned" that quickly I can understand the concern.

Don't some of the TPGs have guarantees that would buy back a contaminated coin that made it into one of their holders? I don't know, but it's a question worth asking. If a coin starts doing a chameleon act over a short period of time like that, it's worrisome. Red copper turning or shiny proofs getting haze or milkspots is understandable at times, but gold is supposed to be fairly inert and resistant to such change!

Just drop it onto one of those magic felt pads right quick and it'll be good to go in no time.

Unless you are storing that coin in the attic or the water closet, I would definitely be concerned and be in contact with PCGS to find out what's up?

Was the coin recently graded? A cert number might be helpful.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Cert # is 08260536. I'm not sure when it was graded, but it's new enough not to have the "Series" on the label.

The coin was stored along with many other gold coins, and is the only one that turned bad.

Here is a shot that shows some of the stuff:

    mmm, that's tough.

Is it different looking than the "black" which often shows up on Saints' high points?

it would have been nice to get the cartwheel luster going in the
    same directions for comparison purposes...

what was the coin graded would have also been helpful.
a shot of the whole slab showing the serial number would have been helpful.

but my first reaction is yes, something is wrong with the coin.

ryk and i were just talking about this and if we thought puttying
was going on to this day and if the tpgs could catch it...

Looks like Thanksgiving leftovers in tightly sealed tupperware, although this doesn't look like putty... your bird has spoiled! image

The photographic technique appears different between the before and after shots. That said, if the coin surface has really (really) changed, there is a good chance that it had been puttied...or at the very least there is a foreign material on the coin's surface.

It's possible the slab was not sealed properly and humidity condensed inside onto the coin causing the mold....
