Cracked out IHC Pleasent Suprise Guess the Grade

I do not collect IHC but when i saw this on E-Bay something said to buy it. I purchased it for almost nothing. I had six free submissions from NGC so i decided to send this in because i had nothing to lose. Arrived in the mail today.

NGC grades liberally on indian cents, so I will go with MS-64RB.

    Nice coin, Congratulations!

You either got a MS64RB or MS65RB from NGC.
How much price difference is there for that one? I'm thinking it isn't that big but could be wrong.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Other than the chin and nose hits which aren't terrible its a great coin, 63?
  • BECOKABECOKA Posts: 16,961 ✭✭✭
Maybe 63RB but those gashes make me think it should have stayed 62.
  • 64RB
Have bought and sold on BST, many references available when asked.
  • adamlaneusadamlaneus Posts: 6,969 ✭✭✭
That gash on the chin should keep it at 63.

If not, then i've got an IHC to send in too!
  • Batman23Batman23 Posts: 4,999 ✭✭✭✭✭
I will guess it went 64RB.
  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭
I would say 63.. but with your exuberance, I am thinking you aced it with a 64..... Cheers, RickO

  • Wow! I don't think any of us guessed that.
  • IrishMikeIrishMike Posts: 7,737 ✭✭✭
Heh, I wasn't sure that's why I left PF/MS out of my guess. I had the same thing happen to me on an 07, was sold to me as MS and PCGS graded it correctly as a proof.

I personally disagree with the PR assessment, but a nice score nonetheless.

Interesting....the feather tips look a bit weak for a proof, and those handling marks also would suggest it was struck as a circulation coin rather than a proof. But it worked out great for you regardless!

i completely disagree that this coin is proof. i see no reflection or contrast whatsoever, the the strike isnt sharp enough for it to be a proof.
  • DRUNNERDRUNNER Posts: 3,888 ✭✭✭✭✭
Tremendous for you! I would have to concur with several above . . .I just would never have guessed it was a proof from the pix (no problem with the pix). I'd love to hear Rick Snow on this one . . . . .

    A very interesting post . . .

Interesting, To me your pictures make the fields look more like what I would expect to see on business struck coin, appears that there is abosultly no mirroring in the fields.

i agree. i would expect a proof to have a better strike.
looks like a business strike to me.

    where is eagleeye???

In hand the fields are shiny. Could it be because i took the pictures with a flash?

Looks like a business strike coin to me and I would imagine there is a decent chance that NGC may have made a mechanical error in the labeling of the coin as a proof.

I just looked through both of Snow's books (1992 & 2007 Whitman) to see if there might be an explanation. No info in either book that is relevant on the 1905s (except to say that the 1901-07 proof issues had frequent die polishing lines---not evident on this piece).

The lettering (ONE CENT) looks rounded, the hits (date) look typical of a circulation-struck coin, the strike looks average at best for a circulation strike, and the denticles are typical of a business strike . . . obviously not up to standard for a proof striking. The fields do not show any evidence of mirror finish typical of a proof, but yes, perhaps the pix are masking it???

But . . . I am a hacker and NGC guys do this for a living. I'm wondering if I should send in all my 1879-1909 RBs to NGC to see if I might be mistaking their designation???

I think this will be the "Thread of the Night" . . . and I'll be watching to see if Rick chimes in . . .

  • Unless the graders also type the labels, this could be a typo. Wouldn't be the first one.

The coin is not a proof. There are some fairly easy to spot die charateristics for a 1905 proof. Here is a proof 1905 and if you look at the denticles near the F in OF there is a small raised tickmark protruding slightly into the field. It is absent on your coin. Not too metion the lack of a sharp rim and overall weakness of strike.........Deffinately a mechanical error.

Never would have guessed it was a proof. It may be a mechanical error.
