Retail only guarantees one hit, anyway. I'm sure there will be a few bonus "hit boxes" out there. Maybe not as many as in hobby cases, but still some. After all, Topps increased the number of subsets this year, as well as the number of relics, extended minis, etc. That stuff all has to go someplace.
Granted, retail won't yield as many relics or autos as hobby. Or any silks or rip cards. That's by design. But there are still hits, and some big ones, like DNA cards.
Unless Topps totally bones retail buyers with the collation, the much lower cost of retail packs and boxes will totally make up for the diminished number of hits. That's especially true if you're a set builder or mini-subset-builder, since SPs and rare minis have, in the past, been just as easy to get in retail as in hobby packs.
On a holistic level, $20 for an 8-pack blaster and $60 for a retail box seems just dandy to me.
What do you really lose buying a pack of retail A&G? Two base cards and the odds of getting a framed "hit" go down. Considering how lame most of the framed hits are... yeaaah....
What do you gain? At $3/pack and $60/box (or $20/8-pack blaster), a much cheaper way to quickly stockpile SPs and rare minis. Last year, I was averaging a snake card every other blaster. This year, they've got five tough mini sets going (sharks, aviation, team orange, ancient icons, baseball icons). I'm looking forward to pulling lots of those from retail packs.
... and along the way I'll pull a few relics and autos, too. Of course, I wasn't one of the lucky ones to pull Bruce Lee relics and Dennis Rodman autos out of last year's blasters, but there were plenty of folks doing so!
Edit: I just checked out that guy's 24 pack break at Beckett. He got a shark mini and a baseball icons mini. Plus he inadvertently provided a hint on Topps' collation that SCARES THE HELL OUT OF ME or makes me happy, depending on the mood I'm in. Last year, Topps collated all of the base SPs into the skinny packs. Thicker packs came with a Dick Perez card or had a hit. So, you had to choose: go for the hit or guarantee an SP?This year, it seems like they've put all the base SPs into the thick packs. There is NO reason then to bother with the skinny packs. Buy a thicker pack this year and get an SP, plus have a chance at a hit, and still get the usual random shot at a rare mini.
I am back from vacation and finally opened up some boxes from Paul and a few I got locally. I am sorting them out and trying to figure out what sets I want to do before I get a list up.
I am still trying to finish off last years sets and would give any 2008 for some 07 holes.

Retail blisters spotted at the Lansing and East Lansing Walmart locations!!
No loose packs in boxes or blasters, but both locations had blister sealed packs on hanging pegs in the sports card section. Neither store had many. Lansing had 6 left, East Lansing had 4. I bought 3 from each just to leave some for the next guy.
My results: 4 base SPs (all from the "fat" packs that have a state card, yup) 4 AG back minis 1 world leader 1 regular mini
Nothing major, but it does confirm what we already knew: the fat packs with state cards also have SPs.
Last year when the 2007 A&G came out, the only store that carried retail here in Central Ohio was Target. I visited every major store for weeks after the first day that retail first appeared at Target and there was never A&G at any other store. I'll be checking Target tomorrow for retail. Here is a list of our other local stores that have never stocked A&G:

No loose packs in boxes or blasters, but both locations had blister sealed packs on hanging pegs in the sports card section. Neither store had many. Lansing had 6 left, East Lansing had 4. I bought 3 from each just to leave some for the next guy.

I visited every major store for weeks after the first day that retail first appeared at Target and there was never A&G at any other store. I'll be checking Target tomorrow for retail. Here is a list of our other local stores that have never stocked A&G:

I've seen others posting here that they have been found at their local WalMart stores. Anyone ever find them at KMart or Meiers?
