Something Smells Fishy

This seller has 117 items up for auction and they are all very nice coins. For the first five days there was a reserve on every item and then he took the reserve off of all but six. I was bidding on five items and then a certain buyer has outbid me on all of the items. This buyer has bid on 103 items. He is the second high bidder on 21 and the high bidder on 82. He did not bid on 14. I am new to this and do not know what to make of it. Could someone please explain to me what is happening?
Thank You

    Shill bidding and scam.
  • This is what I would make of it... don't spend your money with that particular seller until you are very, very sure. That is not a fish smell. It is a smell found in the zoo where the animal septic system is, if you dig down a few feet. Respectfully, John Curlis

Reported to ebay to look at the shill factor.

    Carolyn,

In case you are totally new to eBay and don't know what shill bidding is...... I'd define it like this............ someone has an auction or auctions alive on eBay. He has a 'friend', or even another eBay ID, who will purposely raise the bidding with probably no desire to win the auction. The hope is that people like you and I want the item BAD, and will outbid the shill bidding, which would result in a higher end price for the item. This is against eBay rules and violators who are caught could very easily be kicked off eBay.

And yes, what you describe sounds like shill bidding. image

On eBay, buy the seller first, then the coin. I think your instincts are right.

I see nothing that would cause me not to buy from this seller if they had something listed that I wanted. They have a long history of excellent feedback for delivering the goods on lots of pricey material.

I agree. There are two problems:

    1. The scans are low quality

    2. If I buy something from this seller, I will have less money to spend on Russ' auctions. image

And I found the same thing on several of the auctions. Sorry no more bids from this buyer.

Question why would you put a
eBay Note: The seller lowered the reserve price to US $67.00. Learn more
On a $300.00 plus coin. Why only if you had somebody like this in your hip pocket.

I recently won a Barber Half from this seller - and have no problems with him at all.
Another friend, PursuitsOfLiberty also has won an auction lot from this seller, and
is more than pleased with his transaction.

The seller is Dr. Sam Berngard, who recently auctioned off his Territorial Gold collection
at Stacks last weekend. His business card states he is with Dolphin Holdings and Acquisitions, L.L.C.
and his title is Numismatist. This Dolphin Holdings seems to be a division of
RLH Enterprises, Inc. - 23852 Pacific Coast Highway, # 616, Malibu, CA 90265.

    The seller enclosed a three page flyer with listings of coins that were for sale;
when querried about the flyer, he mentioned that he doesn't own these coins, personally.

I believe RLH Enterprises is owned by Bob Hughes, well known coin dealer.

I'm gonna chime in ... although this is obviously a shill reserve (IMO), I did buy a coin from the seller and both the coin and the service were stellar.

I also know (as he told me) that not all of the coins are his, but he is the seller. He is a well known collector, and he delivered promptly. I will
not answer any other or give any other information openly here, but if the price is right and the coin looks right, I think you will be pleased.

As a seller, I kinda like those "cheap SOB" bids! As a matter of fact, sometimes I'll bid only a couple of bucks at a time and see absolutely nothing wrong with it. I'd encourage it.
