if it is that they assigned stars with the grades...they are "pq" coins in that grade and you scored
everything in life is but merely on loan to us by our appreciation....lose your appreciation and see

The star designation from NGC is supposed to inidicate 'superior eye appeal' and has nothing to do with the actual grade of the coin. I gather from recent threads and from my own experience NGC is sometimes confusing as to what they consider 'superior eye appeal'.

Looks like a great score to me.

Congrats on the grades. image Would love to see some images.

  • Another great reason to be part of the message boards, such a wealth of information. I had no idea about the star designation. Those 2 buffs if not for the slight brush would have gathered high MS grades

Hope they put something on the slab indicating PQ. I haven't seen a PQ slabbed coin yet.

I'll work on getting some photos to the boards as soon as I get the coins back

I don't recall ever seeing star designated AU buff nickels. I'd love to see some images whenever possible.

They will do that when the coin has EXCEPTIONAL eye appeal - It does not necessarily have to mint state

I agree WHERE ARE THE PICS image

  • The results of the submisson were just cut and paste from the NGC order status page
They just shipped the coins Thursday so I should have them today or early next week
These will be the first PQ designated coins in my set.

When did the PQ designation start? Was this a business decision on NGC's part to get collectors to
resubmit older slabbed coins in hopes of acquiring the PQ status.

There won't be anything else on the slab - the star says it all. Congrats!

Found this in their site too, so the AU * designation is new this year.

On January 1, 2008, NGC expanded its Star Designation to all grades of US coinage up to MS 69 and PF 69. Previously, the Star Designation was limited to coins grading between MS 63/PF 63 and MS 69/PF 69.
Have bought and sold on BST, many references available when asked.
  • Just got the coins today via USPS. While I fiddle mith my camera to get some pictures y'all are welcome to take a look at my NGC registry set in the buffalo nickels section, luvdembuffs, rank 26. Looks like when I added the coins they show the star designation automagically

Unless those coins have sentimental value, why would you have those coins graded? Even if you used economy, their value is barely above the submission costs, except for the 1921.
  • Nice looking coins. Should be a nice set when all complete. image

Starsandstripes, Do you mind telling us where you found those buffs? Were they in an album? Just wondering -- they are striking....Mike

I crossed them from ANACS to NGC slabs to put them in my registry set
I used the economy grading but your right I have exceeded the value of the coin
but just think 2 have star designations now which may add a little premium

I purchased 3 ANACS slabbed coins 4-5 years ago from DLRC. I was lucky enough to have
been browsing the David Lawrence website when they were just put up for sale. They
must have been ANACS slabbed by the same collector since the serial numbers were sequential

All 3 coins exhibit the same blazing gold toning with rainbow around the periphery so they may have been
in a coin book for some years
    I'll post the 23-P AU58 picture when I get a chance
