If You're Currently in the Baltimore Area, Have You Seen an ANA WFM Commercial on TV? Here's My Ques

For the people who are currently in the Baltimore area, have you seen the television commercials for the ANA World's Fair of Money Convention on the tv yet? I saw the commercial last night during the commercial break for the nightly news on the NBC affiliate, and after viewing it one question immediately came to mind...

WHY IS THE VOICEOVER FOR THE COMMERCIAL SPEAKING IN AN ENGLISH ACCENT? I thought the commercial was for the American Numismatic Association's convention.

If the ad designers think a quasi-European accent sounds more exotic or professional then they're out of their minds. That's my opinion, but let's discuss...

Maybe the ad calls for using the Queen's English?

Of course. A high class english accent has certain cultural meanings to America.

Didn't you also know that ancient Roman elite also speak in an english accent? They do in every movie I have ever seen.

Good advertising is all about understanding how to leverage cultural nuances like this. They are trying to appeal to the masses. That often seems appalling to the educated.

Maybe the British took back control of Baltimore and didn't tell anyone.

Don't forget that according to the movies all people in space or aboard spacecraft also speak with an English/ British accent (see Star Wars). Who knew British colonialism transcended through space and the far reaches of the universe too.

The commercial was on WBAL, the NBC affiliate in Baltimore.

A British/Australian or other accent is used to get the listener’s attention. Probably the most common are GEICO Insurance and their talking gecko, and Outback Steak House and the phony Australian announcer.
  • I'm willing to bet money that a Joisy cat will get a british gecko's attention very quickly. Respectfully, John Curlis

The commercial also looks a bit cheesy, but that's a totally different subject.

Unfortunately, Orson Welles and John Houseman are no longer with us...

James Earl Jones would have been a good choice
