Sometimes even a dog finds an old bone ... ;) ... a NEWP

In my numismatic life, my first experience with Barbers was with Dimes. Shortly thereafter I started picking up
Liberty Nickels as well. It wasn't until years later that I bought my first Quarter, which started a whole new
addiction ... as some of you may know from here.

My spreadsheet for Liberty (Barber) Dimes still has this little blurb ...

This is a series I became interested in sometime very early on in my numismatic life, and I wish I could have back
a few of the pieces I've sold, including the stellar AU58/Unc 1894-O I bought at the Seattle ANA in 1990.

That was a long time ago. Eighteen years ago next month. Two of my children weren't even born yet, and I had just
recently found out what my wife was pregnant with our second (my wonderful daughter, soon to be HS Senior).

Anyway, this was a tough one ... due partially to the pictures, and partially to just eBay in general. I thought
about it for three days prior to the close. It was tough to think of what she might look like in hand. Armed with my
10% discount (LOL) and forgoing an almost unbelievable BIN I saw on another lot, I was ready to win. Good thing
no one wanted to go really big.

Anyway, this coin arrived today ... and I can tell you I am a happy camper image

Her color has just a little more green mixed in with the gold than my pictures picked up on, and in all, she is
a very similar coin to the one I remember all those years ago. Not quite as pristine, but similar in color and
crispness ... a worthy addition to my collection all the same.

These are the sellers pictures ...

A little research found the coin on Heritage back in 2002 ... which for those of us who remember, can attest to
images far from today's quality and color ...

Here are my first pictures ...

    Very nice!!!

At first, you would not think that is the same coin.

Recognizing eBay sellers who are taking substandard pictures of nice coins...it's a numismatic game of chicken!

    Congrats!

  • WTG, nice pick up.

It would be much much more cooler if it was a merc.

    Todd,

Nice coin and a better story; thanks for sharing.

Its also very interesting seeing Dr. Sam's, Heritage's and your images -
doesn't look like the same coin. LOL.

The 94-O is a tough one - I know only too well.

    Congrats on this Pick-Up !!

  • Nice dime- the contrast between the seller's pics and yours are amazing. You got a very pretty coin.

Thanks for all the comments ... it's funny, in hand it looks like all three pictures, depending on the light.

I'm not sure I like my photo completely ... I'm trying to take some more to get the color right

but she's a babe ... and I really her image

  • Great dime!

The sheet has the '94-O as the fourth scarcest coin in AU, behind the '95-O, '01-S and '03-S.
The sheet is partially right. The '94-O may be fourth hardest to find but not because of any
twentieth-century issues. Both the 1901-S and 1903-S are more available in AU than this '94-O.
The 1896-O and 1896-S are both rarer in this grade. This coin should have sold for close to
    $1000?

    Steve,

LTNS ... glad to see you're still around. image

Very accurate assessment of rarities. My experience has shown me that this is one of the big three Dimes in terms of availability above Choice EF (if we exclude the 94-S).

As far as price ... no one showed up at the party and I got it at a bargin price (PM me if you want details as I know these are your passion) ... but as the title of my thread suggests, sometimes, even the dog gets one image

I saw this coin at the last Baltimore show, and I need a PCGS example of this date in my set. Fortunately for you, I am in "sell" mode right now and I have temporarily forgotten about Barber dimes! I liked the PCGS MS65 1894-P that the same seller had. That coin was sweet in person, and I would have bought it before the 1894-O. Did you happen to see that one?

I must admit, I was usually please with those old images despite their poor resolution. For whatever reason, most of the images Heritage offered portrayed nice coins surprisingly accurately.
